Are wood stocks ever functionally better than synthetic?

I'm more of a straight grained, practical carpenter kind of guy..... :)

Some of those stocks look pretty nice though Ardent.

The modern metal chassis style stocks are my least favourite for cold weather use.

Wood beats the crap out of synthetic any time that you actually have to look at the gun.

Aside from aesthetics, a lot of the cheap synthetics are very flimsy and flexible compared to a good laminate. Laminated stocks are a really nice compromise; the feel and sound of wood, and even some of the visual appeal, while still offering most or much of the weather resistance of quality synthetic and similar strength, durabiity and rigidity.

Wood stocks would shoot down the Chinese spy balloon, Synthetic stocks would write "Welcome" with sidewalk chalk.

I am firmly in the "wood" camp. I love nicely figured wood stocks.

As has been stated, wood has "soul" and feels so nice in the hands.

I have one rifle with a very high quality synthetic on it, but it is the
outlier in my gunsafes. Laminates make sense if you do not mind
a little extra weight. I have a 325 WSM so stocked. Dave.

Synthetic gun stocks function much better than wood, in many different ways. I personally enjoy both kinds of stocks, however, favor the wood over the synthetic.

No real preference. I find plain wood to be nicer than cheap plastic, they bed nicely and are easier to sand down with less flex. Laminate is a nice compromise, but for brutal weather synthetics are tough to beat. I like some of the carbon fiber options but I'm also partial to the plain old B&C and HS Precision fiberglass stocks with aluminum blocks, they aren't as light as the space age stuff but are tough and reliable.
