Do you hunt with 100 year old cartridges? Here is your thread....

Ardent:

Hear Hear

Members join now and stand as one of the founding fathers in our Merry gang of the delusional who refuse to accept the new ways, still hunting with bygone relics and doing so damn sharply might I say.

To the Century Club, Gentlemen.

Stand and be counted!

Might want to set the bar a little older to keep it interesting maybe 110-130 years old?

The 270s 90 years old now (slow clap *Yaaaay .270, dissapointing hunters for nearly a century*)

But yes I enjoy hunting with the older ones.

One corner of the safe is dedicated the finest Canadian game cartridge ever devised, the 303 British. Can't wait to take the 205 grain Woodleighs out to the range once things warm up! Got a 30-30 in there that ought to qualify too. :)

I've got a few 100 year old cartridges in my hunting rifle collection. 7x57, 8x57, 45-70, 6.5x55, 9.3x62, .30-06, .375 H&H, and 8x64. I have a couple that are almost there as well like the 7x64 and .270.

I take my 303 Savage out for a walk at least once a season.

It belonged to my dad and his father and will someday belong to my son.

7x57- 1892
30-30- 1895
9.3x62- 1905
30-06- 1906

Plus 12 gauge and .22 l.r. that have been around forever.

I think cartridge development could have come to a screaming halt in 1935, and with but a handful of exceptions, we wouln't really be any worse off today.

Well, actually, there is a vast majority who does... because the '06 surely still is one the more popular cartridge in N-A..
Anyhow, I do in many calibers; 9X57, 9.3X57, 9.3X62, 6.5X55 (but in reality, only thje 160 grains loads are really 100 years old!) 8X57, 303 British, .280 Ross and on...

25-06 (if you go by when Newton developed it)
30-06
9.3x62
416 Rigby
45-70
470 NE

Not I've got a few of the newfangled ones as well, just to keep the fuddishness somewhat at bay.

Oh yeah;
30-30
30-06
45-70
A roundball shooting hawken copy in .50 calibre
And very very soon a BP cartridge 10 gauge combo gun, again with a BP only 45-70 barrel underneath it..........:)

Edit: In the spirit of this thread, there should be extra points for blackpowder cartridges. hehe....

When you stop and think about the cartridges in use today weather it's the latest 26 Nosler or something a little older, they are all derived from cases that have been around more that a century. Kind of depressing to ponder, but other than some advances it bullets and optics, damn little has changed in past 100 years.

How bout a cartridge and an antique rifle introduced/made about a 145 years ago. Here's my 1860s original Remington made roller in 50-70. I have not harvested any game with it yet but came close. I had it tree stand hunting last fall and gave a 200 lb bear a free pass cause my tree cam indicated a much bigger one attending. I had him in my sights for several minutes with the hammer cocked, trigger finger itchin - a 450 grainer ready to say howdy. Should have pulled the trigger as the photogenic big boy turned out a no show.
