I am curious, do you recommend things to people that are maybe 'less than ideal' just because you like them. Or do you stand back and recommend what is good and reliable, regardless of YOUR personal bias.

I mean, say someone says to you in person. "Hey I need a *****, any suggestions". Do you recommend your personal prefference, or do you recommend what you think will suit that person best?

Honestly.

Professionally ... I try to keep my opinion to myself until it is asked for. :?
Recreationally... I will tell you when you need my opinion whether you want it or not... :p

I NEVER let my personal preferances get in the way of a straight answer, for the main reason that the stuff I like is very , well , different compared to most calibers and hunting rifles!

I am kind of the same.I rarely recommend the cartridges that I use myself as they simply aren't the best choice for many shooters.

Where's the "Both A & B" option?
I'm hardly likely to recommend something inappropriate but like most people I have preferences.
The more specific the request is the less likely you are to hear my personal preferences, however I usually give the advice and then add a rider on what I like and possible alternatives.
The other thing you have to remember is that in a shooting/hunting context, which let's face it, is what this list is all about, that there are almost endless alternatives depending on the situation, user & game combination.
So when someone asks "Should I get a 308 or a 30-06?" the possibilities are endless, not just because of what they may be hunting but also because both of those rounds may be realistically less suitable than about 5 other cartridges that are almost as readily available.
Of course, that's just an example.
In the end I present my advice not just some advice.......if that adds up to my preference then I guess I do give my personal preference.

I tell everyone to get a 30-06 bot action form a major manufaturer and top it with a decent scope.

I'm not about to start tellign new hunters that they need to fireform to have fun with a huting rifle!

I am with kombi though I think I would add A+B+C, very few times there is one very defined right answer, most of the time we are faced with too many right answers. Awhile back there was a post polling who would use the accubond 140 or the barnes 130 in a 270. Actually I am currently lamenting the same question. I finally figured out why it is taking so long to decide it's that they are both right along with 10-20 maybe more different bullets. That's where C comes in just flip a coin amd be done with it.

I the spirit of my post I have just flipped a coin heads was the Nosler but it came up tails so the 130 tripleshocks it is.

I usually try to explain the pro's and con's of whatever is asked of me, then leave it for that person to "choose for themselves"...unless of course, they are just wrong and need to be told what is right.

Mostly I just tell people that I am Way too high on crack to make an informed decision, then if they still want my oppinion, I ask them to wait until I have polished off the case. usualy gets me outta most conversations,, err and marriages
