It's a pretty good rifle and I'm happy with mine. The safety wasn't a big deal in competition for me, the recoil is almost non-existent, it's a well-built rifle that will function reliably. I was getting decent speed on strong-hand mag changes (practiced those because I had to do some in prone position). As of today, I'll also have my optics mounted and dialed in on Wednesday - just gotta accept reflex or shorty. I even had a long scope mounted and it held zero but having to mount it far back was inconvenient, so it's better to just run what the rifle was designed for.

I didn't even order one based on that premise. I saw a bunch on display at Target Sports and chuckled to myself, figuring they weren't selling well. I had to take a look at one to see what all the fuss was about. Then I end up walking out of the store with one. Seems I was at the right place at the right time for one and I was wrong. I don't need an inexpensive bull pup - I already have Tavor, FS2000, RFB, PS90 and a few AR's. IMO, the T97 is a decent rifle, ignoring the price.
 
The trigger is nice, but even if it shoots well, the sights such and the options to mount better such. So really you're left with possibly the ugliest gun ever made that has an OK trigger. Yippee

We may even see a bolt release, who knows. If we do thats 2 advantages down and closes the gap between the 2. The flat top rail is the most drastic difference/advantage IMO.

Price increase of which gun? The tavor?
T97 will never get a flat top rail unless they re-design the gun.
 
I'm sure someone can design a chassis for this thing, but the work involved in fitting the barreled receiver would be massive.

Not as much work as you might think, if I had a T97 to work with over the December break I might be able to get it done. 3D printing would allow me to make dozens of design changes within a week or two, and with a laser scanner I could easily get the dimensions and work around it. Then once I've got the finished design I can CNC it if needed, or investment cast it using the 3D printed pieces.

That's why I asked earlier how long the upper and lower are, to make sure my 3D printer has enough build area to make it in one piece.
 
The fact that I already have an AR combined with the ergonomic train wreck means that I will pass on this one.

At this point, I think the best budget choice is either a CZ 858 if you can find one or a 7.62x39mm CSA VZ 58. Hopefully, VZ 58 pistols and their associated magazines will be forthcoming shortly.
 
Rallix, if you build something that turns it into a less junky POS you'll make money.
 
I beg to differ there Slavex, the T97 is a bit odd to get used to and the ergonomics good have been better but it you take it apart the action is really neat. From a mechanical stand point I like it. Your standards are just too high, or maybe mine are too low ;)
 
IIRC, my 1st gen Tavor was around $3,500 with the Mepro sight. Being dissatisfied with the Mepro, I had to buy a special tool to unlock the barrel and a custom rail attachment from Dlask. So with the T97, I figure, what else is new - at least the rail attachment is easy & painless to install. What really bothered me most, was the Tavor's heavy trigger. Anyway, I'm very happy with my T97 - I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Type 88 sniper.

It wouldn't be hard for a competent machinist using the front sight base and the rear sight tower to make a flat top. Cut the FSB and rear sight off above where the rail would mount, build a side charging handle that fits in the existing riveted hole and replaces the OEM one, and you can make the rail pretty darn low.

With the right design, it would be a pretty straight forward install in kit form for someone with average skills with power tools.
 
If it was made in any other country then china at the same price i would buy it , i hate chinese slave labour garbage even if some of it is decent quality , im already forced to buy enough of their filth ..

That's the dream. Luckily as far as a base, the T97 looks like a good platform to play with, the innate simplicity of the rifle makes it ideal even. But I'll have to wait till I can either afford one or till someone loans me theirs to work on.

Being a student I won't be affording it any time soon though.
