Hi all,

This was just posted today on The Firearm Blog. Ares Defence is coming out with the Sporting Configurable Rifle. It is a rifle that will take any standard AR-15 upper on a lower that looks more like a traditional sporting rifle configuration. It uses a modified bolt carrier with a rat tail, somewhat similar to the FN-FAL.

I like the look. It has some similarities to a SU-16 or (vaguely) a Mini-14, but is fully compatible with AR-15 magazines. It was apparently designed back in 2003 when it looked like the assault weapons ban might be extended. With the recent proliferation of new laws in many US states, this new rifle is 100% legal in all 50 states.

Unfortunately, due to the fact it takes AR-15 uppers and magazines, I have no doubt it will be considered a variant of the AR-15 and be restricted in Canada. That being said, I might buy one anyway when they are finally available, just to have something different.

Anyway, check out this write up on The Firearms Blog:

I like it. Very similar to the Benelli MR1 Comfortec just much more American. I wonder if you could throw on a rifle length handguard for a nice long iron sight picture. It would be a better M14 (accuracy wise).

Isn't the very existence of this rifle considered "A Compromise?"

Whomever created it don't fully understand the issue. The issue is not because the AR15 externally resembles a military rifle... the issue it that it's a GUN!

Sure, they will milk the market in the "Blue states" for a little while... then they will be forced to give it up for some other reason the grabbers think of.

They should take a note from the "No Compromise" movement up here... not one more inch should be given!

I would say that the very existence of this gun is proof that no matter how narrowly you draft a law to outlaw certain types of weapons, someone wil come up with a new and better widget that will circumvent those new restrictions.

Rather than see this as a compromise, I see it as giving gun owners a legal method to thumb their nose at the idiot lawmakers and their attempts to discriminate against modern sporting rifles.

I believe we should fight the gun grabbers at every turn, stop or repeal bad (illogical) laws, but in the meantime, I think getting new guns into gun owner's hands that circumvent these laws is a good interim measure.

Finally, I want to see AR-15s made non-restricted here in Canada, but until that time comes, I will probably buy this gun just because I like the look.

For quite some time now I've been of the personal opinion that blurry lines are probably the best defence for gun owners. Rifles like the one above or the MR1 or even stocks like the MDT Tac21 all fit into lovely little niches in which gun haters will think a bolt gun looks "scary and evil" and in which law makers would have a major challenge on their hands to word a Bill in such a way that would severely limit the types of firearms available to Canadians.

Did you just compare this little half-breed pea-shooter to my glorious .30 cal battle rifle?! Whyyyyyy I ouuuuughta! :)
It does like fun to shoot, but if restricted I don't think it would do well here.
