Arghh! .257 Weatherby brass problem.

so I've got some once fired brass for a .257 weatherby, and after loading roughly 50 rounds, found that many of the once fired, re-primed brass from the original owner, has a slight "roll/bump" just below the shoulder and would not chamber.

1) If I pull all these apart, will I be able to work the "bump" out and salvage the brass?
2) what caused this?
3) anyone seen it before?

There is a guy who makes a Collet die just for this purpose.
I have one, and it works very well indeed.

My bad!! In re-reading your post, you say the bulge is just below the shoulder.
A standard FL die should iron this out just fine.
You can remove your decapping pin so the primers are not pushed out when you size them.
The collet die I referred to irons out a bulge just in front of the belt.

If the bump is just below the shoulder your FL resizing die should remove it. The other die mentioned is for a bump that forms just above the belt. - dan

hmm, I will try to FL again.

I encountered some that would NOT chamber, and still would not after running the through the FL.

C.O.L was below the maximum for loaded rounds.

Your seater die may be the cause if it is crimping the neck.

If you blacken a case with a permanent marker, and then try to chamber it, you will plainly see where the interference is.
Then you can decide what needs to be done to rectify the problem.

Or adjusted slightly wrong. Run a resized case into the seater die with no bullet and see if anything happens to the brass.

I've seen that as well when the seater die is set to close to the shellholder and it crushes the brass when seating the bullet.
I've been able to fix by running through FL die in the past.

I agree with the previous posters about an improperly adjusted seating die pushing back the shoulder and causing your problems.

I have been having similar problems using Hornady dies, the ball expander is oversized and is buckling my 257 brass. Sent dies back to hornady and picked up a set of weatherby dies at a gunshow.
