Does anybody know if the arisaka butt splices where originally glued or only held in place by the dovetail? I picked up a 8mm carbine conversion at orangeville this weekend & the butt is loose. I will post pics after I am done cleaning it up but I an pretty sure its been on cgn before. It has a piece of a brass chinese calendar under the rear band. Sound familiar?

If I remember correctly they were compression fitted with glue in the later years, and some have a single dovetail in the center in the earlier versions. I've been looking for one like that for ages... where did you pick it up at the show (which dealer?)
Your best bet would probably be able to use some super strong glue and clamp it up into place in my opinion. Should be good as new.

I think it was the third table in on the left when viewed from the entrance. He also had a single shot indian enfield, ag42, & two fn49 for sale. I asked him if it had a bore & he said yes. I should have asked if it had rifling as you can hardly see it. Still an interesting piece though, lots of history. 18' barrel & 8x57 should be an interesting combo on the range. It will probably end up in the ee after I try it out. Damned impulse purchases.

I own one in the original 6.5 Arisaka. I wish you well at the range, as personally my barrel has little rifling either but almost no pitting either. The fact yours was converted, it could be a Chinese capture conversion or maybe post-war convert. I wish you luck with that buttstock though, and PM me with your range results desporterizer, I would be interested to see the results of your paper hunt. She will probably kick like a mule, but I enjoy recoil *smiles* If you can, would you mind sending me pictures? I can give you my e-mail through PM. I always love these carbines. I would also be interested in how much you paid for it, to compare it to my purchase.

I remember that table and the FN 49s too. The light in that building is crappy for checking the bore which is why I always bring a bright flash light.

I was at the table, closest left corner of the building when coming in from the entrance, completing a deal for my Kar98a.

I did notice alot of No 5 Mk 1s floating around, I forget how small that rifle really is.
