So...in my hunt for a '38 Arisaka I recieved these pics from another Gunnutter (who thought I might actually know something;) )

Anyway....it looked pretty rough with a few missing peices but I thought the general shape of the stock was funny...not funny haha but funny weird

Any comments?

I'm no expert on these rifles, but judging by the photos I'm comparing it to, it looks as though the forearm from about the recoil bolt to the barrel band has been sanded or otherise reshaped. It seems to get narrower as it approaches the barrel band.

Here is a Tyle-38, the forearm is noticeably different.

However, here is a picture of a Type 99 that seems to feature the same taper on it's stock.

I suppse it's not that unlikley that these later model stock designs were adopted for late war (post-1940) type 38 rifles?

"Last ditch" Type 99. Rare maker - Jinsen arsenal in Korea.

All the features look correct for that particular model, including the wooden buttplate held on with 3 nails. BTW, has all the parts it's supposed to have.

If you don't buy it, direct the seller to me please :)

Tsk tsk tsk - it's not a "last Ditch" rifle (which did exist and was naval issue only), it's a late-war "substitute standard" T99 in 7.7 Japanese. And a nice one made at an uncommon arsenal from the look of it. They are rough like that on purpose.

How's the bore? Did you buy it?

Here's what I suggest. Don't tell anyone where it is and how to contact the owner - if you do, it will be scooped for sure.

Buy it for the best price you can, say $200, and then, if you find it is worth a lot more, let your conscience guide you to offer him more.

Splitting hairs old boy? :)

Both this model and the Naval special Type 99 are considered "last ditch" rifles. Simply a generic collector's term for the substitute T99. Some designations for other substitutes are complete constructions such as the"02/45"variation of the T35.

Interesting rifle and quite collectable.
