I have a Type 38 Arisaka that I tried out for the first time today. It shot reasonably well but deformed the case and the primers protruded considerably after being shoot. The shoulder was pushed ahead at least 1/8 inch and rounded out. Was this caliber commonly re-chambered to different caliber? I was using new Norma ammo.

In the US, a common conversion was to a 6.5 based on the .257 Roberts case.
Better do a chamber cast.
A 6mm Remington and a .257 Roberts are kissing cousins. See if it will chamber a 6mm case (not a cartridge, don't fire it). If it chambers, that might be what has been done.

"...commonly re-chambered to different caliber..." Yep. Sounds like your rifle has been rechambered too. Start by slugging the bore. Then do the chamber cast. You can get cerrosafe, the material to use for the cast, from Brownells. A half pound runs $28.54US.

Lucky for you an Arisaka is damned near impossible to blow up .P.O ackley tried.the 6.5 was the stongest followed by the 7.7 Jap.The thread size is weird 1.026"-14TPI V type. The Japs made some in 7x57 for the Mexican Gov't but naturally they forgot to pay for them and the remainder went abroad.Coverted to 30-06 for the Thai's as well..........Harold ****also eliptical type rifling that appears worn and rounded when it's not.
