I bought this Type 99 sporter recently. But now a part of me is wondering why. Other than the nice piece of wood, this is going to be a project. It is chambered in 7.7 Jap but the barrel looks worn. It has no iron sights which is fine, but mounting a scope will require a bolt handle modification and a receiver tap job. The rear mounted safety is usable without a scope but not practical with one. I am not sure what modifications could be done. Timney makes a trigger apparently. Someone started this project and I am going to try to finish it. Let me know what you would do with this rifle.

I am thinking a 25/06 or 270 win rebarrel but I haven't showed it to my gunsmith yet.

Talk to me. Please and thanks.

Wow, really neat rifle with the chrysanthemum intact.

I’d be tempted to avoid drilling/tapping/safety/bolt mods and have it fitted with a nice set of open sights or a receiver sight. Maybe a rebore to 338-06 or 35 whelen while you’re at it.

Check out this guys solution to the safety problem lol. Not real elegant but it probably works.

Lovely gun ,I would not touch the bolt it gives it some style.I would rebarrel it and put a nice set of express sights on it to give it the classic old style deer stalker look

I’m with the two guys above, rebor or re barrel in something more available and a nice set of open sights!!

Thanks for your suggestions. I agree that scoping it isn't ideal, nor easy.
The barrel appeared worn to my naked eye. Bright but worn. However my gunsmith looked at it through his bore scope this evening. He noted that the rifling is broad and shallow and in his words, this barrel hasn't shot 100 rounds. The leade is like new, no firecracking or wear.
So it might just stay this way until I can shoot it. The 7.7 Jap cartridge shoots .311 calibre bullets and brass can be made with either 30-06 or 8mm Mauser brass.
Thanks again.

Edited because I saw your post about the nice new barrel, very cool. Woodleigh has load data for the round with their 215 grain 303 bullets

Irons for sure. Imo shave down the pistol grip

Or sell it to me I think this is a pretty cool action and I’ve always wanted to play with one

You could add a knob or ring to the safety like a k31 or SAKO mosin sporter

Yes chrome lined with polygonal or metford type rifling.

Give them a call, they have all sorts of stuff not listed on the site and their staff is very knowledgeable about adapting sights to work on things, they will even tell you if it can’t be done.

Not a one man show anymore, they have a guy who seems to be there just to answer the phone and explain dimensions etc, nice guy very helpful

The 25-06 and the 270 would be to long for that action, without some serious work.

257 Roberts or 7x57 with some modern loads for very strong actions would come very close to duplicating those cartridges in all available bullet weights.

There are no flies on the 7.7 Japanese cartridge IMHO and with modern powders can be loaded beyond 308 Win specs safely.

The biggest issue is going to be finding bullets that will properly fit your bore.

Have you slugged it yet? Type 99 bores are notoriously random with tolerances.

The breeching system on Type 99 rifles is similar but not the same as the Remington 700.

The main difference is the extractor, which is like that found on a 98 Mauser.

The threads are Metric and some smiths aren't equipped to cut them or willing to grind their bits to the proper profile.

Other than that rebarreling is pretty straight forward.

Has the action been stoned to smooth it up? Military 99s can be gritty and easy to bind.

Drilling and tapping for a scope isn't a problem, or at least no more than other milsurps.

That bolt can easily be bent or changed out to one with a more appropriate profile.

The replacement trigger, which I highly recommend, will come with a safety so you don't have to do anything with the original safety.

You don't mention how good your eyes are. Peep sights aren't for people with aging eyes.

Thanks bear hunter, it’s going to stay as a 7.7 jap for now. I ran a couple 308 180 gr accubonds down it the other night. That’s as far as I’ve got it. The action hasn’t been polished. I will be ordering a new trigger. I can shoot peeps ok, it’s unlikely this gun will be carried in the field by me anyhow.
