Arisaka Type 99 Sporter Project

I got this Type 99 shooting finally.
A Skinner Low Pro sight on the rear bridge. And a Model 700 sight up front. The original trigger was lightened slightly. A set of ebay Lee Pace Setter dies, PPU brass from Tradex. 180 gr .311 cal Sierra Pro Hunters, 52 gr D4350 was making a doggy 2200 fps> But how far am I going to shoot with this anyways?
50 yards!
Was low left out of the gate. Then right. Then high. Tapping some windage into the front sight was trial and error. The rear sight was painless. I finally got it shooting in the center.

Maybe i'll try some faster powder. But I am satisfied so far. The last loaded round I decided to try a 200 yard gong. I hit it surprisingly. Unwitnessed...

Thanks, yes it’s a neat piece.
Made in 1943 by Toyo Kogyo under contract by Kokura Arsenal.

Toyo Kogyo went on to eventually become Mazda.

From Wikipedia

Mazda began as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd, as a cork-making factory founded in Hiroshima, Japan, 30 January 1920. Toyo Cork Kogyo renamed itself to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. in 1927. In the late 1920s the company had to be saved from bankruptcy by Hiroshima Saving Bank and other business leaders in Hiroshima.[11]

In 1931 Toyo Kogyo moved from manufacturing machine tools to vehicles with the introduction of the Mazda-Go auto rickshaw. Toyo Kogyo produced weapons for the Japanese military throughout the Second World War, most notably the series 30 through 35 Type 99 rifle. The company formally adopted the Mazda name in 1984, though every automobile sold from the beginning bore that name. The Mazda R360 was introduced in 1960, followed by the Mazda Carol in 1962.

I would love to know the provenance on that.

Something of a unicorn, discussion of them on the web but no pictures to be seen

I love a classic sporter on an unusual milsurp action, the only ones that seem to follow me home were made in someone’s garage though

Sorry, I traded it off, what I stated is what I know. It was well done, which is to be expected from H&H. I've never seen another, in many decades of looking at sporterized rifles. - dan

That's a nice looking stock with the work quite well done. You can probably push 180's up to 2650 or so with no ill effects, apart from recoil. The Arisaka action has some interesting features. The ejector is unique. The breeching system is excellent. The safety is unconventional but it certainly works!

Arisaka barrels are chrome lined and that make them very tough and long lasting.
I did the same project with my 99, the receiver is very hard to drill and tap since i scoped i need it a carbide drill, replaced the bolt handle to clear scope and fitted in a basic walnut stock from R. Microfit.
Since hard time to find brass i resize and cut down to length 06 brass and use .303 150 gr. hornady spire bullets very satisfactory results.40-7.7 jap cup.jpg45-test.jpg
