5 to Arizona

If I knew there were that many going to Arizona, I would have gone too. We could overrun them with Canadians!:D

I should have went but I would have been away from home too long. I am going to the Sin City event after Arizona. I was only going for the weekend but now am going all week so I can fit in some other fun stuff like shooting jack rabbits at night with my glock!:p

I'm sure it's not too late to register.....

I originally was going to shoot the Arizona match then go to Las Vegas, spend the week, and then shoot the Nevada match. Unfortunately I don't have enough vacation days left so I'm flying back from Phoenix Sunday evening and fly to Las Vegas on Thursday following.

We could overrun them with Canadians!:D

Les than 5% is hardly 'overrun'......

....maybe next year we can send a really significant contingent!

Well, I'm about to head off to the airport bound for Phoenix. Duane S. (Winchester3030) will be picking me up when I arrive. Steve M. will arrive a couple of hours later. Joe T. (Corp.Punishment) and his son Dan should already be there. The weather for the match should be great! (+30C & sunny) I'm pumped!!!!

The five of us shot the complete match today; 12 stages and just under 200 rounds; all in 30+ temperatures and sunny skies. We started shooting just before 9 AM and finished just before 6 PM.

The match was VERY challenging! We each had our good stages and some bad. Not everyone finished all the stages today so final results aren't available.

I'm busy saving and uploading pictures (we took LOTS!) and I'll post them as soon as I'm able. But in the mean time, here is a group photo after our last stage of a wonderful, albeit long day of shooting:

Left to right: Joe T. (Corp. Punishment), Dan T. (Corp. Punishment Jr.) Steve M.(Tanner51), Duane S. (Winchester3030) and Mass N. (Dragoon)

Now that looks like fun! I didn't think I would take part in CDP any place other than my club but maybe I will practice a bit more and try out one of these competitions. Congradulations!

Well, I got back from Phoenix yesterday and I had a great time. In fact, I came in second in Marksman Class - Stock Service Pistol Division!

The match was 13 Stages and just under 200 rounds. The forecast was for thunderstorms on Saturday but they never materialized. Weather on Sunday was gorgeous.

Here are some pictures:

Stage12a.jpg

This is me on Stage 12. The stage had pneumatically activated targets! The shooter started in front of the newspaper box. On the start signal, the box was used for low cover and the two targets (just beyond the barrel in the photo) were engaged from there. After they were engaged, the competitor picked up the phone to dial 911 (phone on top of barrel). Picking up the phone activated two targets that appeared in two windows then disappeared. (I'm engaging them in the photo) From there, the shooter moved forward and engaged two 'tail lights' (simulated by clay birds) of a fleeing car. Finally, the shooter moved forward again to the 'elevator door' and pressed the button. This door would open and exposed two threat targets and then a non-threat between the two was activated and partially blocked the two threat targets. This stage was a lot of fun and I even managed to do quite well on it.

Stage7.jpg

This is me on Stage 7. The scenario had you finding a wallet on the ground. As you were picking it up three 'toughs' demanded you give it to them as well as yours. The shooter engaged the three targets with two rounds in any order while retreating to cover. Once behind cover, the targets were to be re-engaged with two round each in tactical sequence. I swung too wide while moving backward and it cost me time to get to the cover.

Stage3.jpg

This is me on Stage 3. The scenario had the competitor in one of the seats in the 'cockpit' of the airliner. Four terrorists highjacked the plane and one has a bomb strapped to his chest (simulated by a balloon). This was the first priority target but if you shot the 'bomb' you got a DNF on the stage. After that target was engaged successfully, the others were engaged in tactical sequence.

Stage2.jpg

This is me on Stage 2. It's very similar to the first string of Stage 2 of the Classifier except a non-threat target is added into the array. All targets had to be engaged (two rounds each) while advancing.

Stage8.jpg

This is me on Stage 8. The scenario had you ambushed in a parkade and you had to engage the three 'bad guys' from under your car with two rounds each, perform a tactical re-load or re-load with retention and re-engage with two rounds each.

Stage4.jpg

Me on Stage 4. This stage had the shooter engage the first two targets in tactical sequence (1-2-1) then move to low cover to engage three more targets (I'm transitioning to the low cover in the photo). Once they were engaged, there were five more targets to be engaged from the prone position.(you can see the 'bomb' (balloon) from Stage 3 in the background)

Plaque.jpg

Another one for the wall in the den! I also picked up a STI Recoil Master off the prize table. They're worth more than what I paid for the match fee!

While in the area I also checked out the Scottsdale Gun Club. Although a very nice place, I must admit I was a bit 'underwhelmed'. I heard a lot about the place over the years and expected something on a much larger scale......

Just got back from the awards presentations. Our own Steve M. won SS / SSP!!!! He beat out 12 other shooters in his class. (final score was 291.05)Well done Steve!

100_1018.jpg

Duane S. came in 5th in SS / SSP with a final score of 309.71 (He also won a Dillon Square Deal press off the prize table!)

Joe T. came in 4th (out of 13) in MM / SSP with a final score of 353.10

100_1019.jpg

And his 12 year old son Dan came in 10th in MM / SSP with a final score of 441.72! Well done Dan!!!!

Me, I came in 5th (out of 18) in SS / CDP with a final score of 297.22.

A great time was had by all. We'll probably all be back next year! Hopefully we can add to number of Canadians in 2009!

Finally got some time to post some photos:

100_0926.jpg

Steve M. was first up for our squad on Stage 1: 'Why you wanna crash my Q?' Here he is holding the 'spatula' waiting for the start signal. The two partial targets immediately in front of him were to be engaged in 'Tactical Sequence' before moving to the low cover of the barrel.

Me engaging the second set of targets in 'Tactical Priority' using 'low cover' on Stage 1.

100_0932.jpg

Duane S., having just completed a 'tactical reload', stows his partial mag while moving to the next position on Stage 1.

100_0940.jpg

Joe T. engaging the next set of targets by 'slicing the pie' on Stage 1.

Steve M. 'slicing the pie' on the second set of targets on Stage 2.

100_0950.jpg

Glen S. from New Mexico just after firing the first string on Stage 3: 'Standards ala George'. Glen is a Master Class shooter in CDP and in fact he won the Division at this match.

100_0951.jpg

Rob, also from New Mexico, shooting the first string on Stage 3. He's a left handed revolver shooter but despite this his reloads were pretty slick.

Steve M. engaging the last targets (including a swinger) on Stage 10.

100_0994.jpg

Duane S. engaging the initial targets on Stage 11: 'The Daily News'. The targets were pneumatically actuated by lifting the handle on the newspaper box. They only appeared for a short time and then disappeared.

100_0995.jpg

Duane S. initiating a 'tactical reload' before entering the doorway on Stage 11.

IMG_0783.jpg

Dan T. moving through the doorway later in Stage 11. Walking past photo cells triggered more pneumatically actuated targets.

IMG_0786.jpg

Steve S. finishing off the last targets on Stage 11.

IMG_0791.jpg

Steve M. engaging targets on Stage 12: 'Cockroaches'. Stage 12 was a 'blind stage'. No one got to see it before shooting it. All we were told was to flip the switch, draw to low cover, and engage the targets 'as you see them'. This was another pneumatically actuated stage.

IMG_0790.jpg

Me initiating a slide lock reload in order to finish off the targets on Stage 12.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the match was very challenging. Lots of movers (including the pneumatic ones), lots of awkward shooting positions and lots of tricky 'cover' positions. This is my second time to the Arizona State Championships and I'm sure to make it an annual trip.

I'm an overnight success! It only took 30-35 years of shooting!! We had a ball! We all got a little nervous though, when they gave us the rattlesnake briefing at the start of the match!
