Ive decided to sell my 20" AR build. I built it up as more of a dedicated, heavy target rifle and while I love the rifle Ive decided to go for a more general Purpose and lighter 20" AR.

Seeing how we don't exactly have all that many options for 20" AR's up here, Ive narrowed it down to the STAG model 4 from Arms East and the Armalite M15 from Wolverine or IRUNGUNS. Both from what I gather make a fine rifle so quality of one over another is a non issue unless someone thinks otherwise.

Problem is I can't really decide on which one, as they both have slightly different specs and features.

I was thinking of setting it up as a C7A1/A2 clone or maybe a personal Concept of what the next gen C7 might look like. I would want it to behave as close to a C7 as possible in terms of handling and accuracy.

For this the STAG from AE is closest to the C7 out of the two with its 1/7 twist and standard A2 front sight.

However, I have read really good things about Armalite and would not mind giving it a go, as well they were really one of the first AR brands I wanted back when I was a pimply teenager that new nothing about firearms. but with the 1/9 twist and low profile gas block its not as close to the C7 Spec. But If ordered from I run guns is a few hundred cheaper. and honestly with a A2 style detachable front sight, the gas block is a non issue. Would the different barrel twist rate make a huge difference?

Any info? Thanks.

The Stags seem to shoot really well. My 4R would shoot just over 1" ten round groups at 100m with match ammo and 4 years, 19K and 3 stoppages later it still shoots inside 2". The ones I have borrowed from friends seem to shoot just as well.

For a general purpose AR the 20" is a dead concept. 16" is the sweet spot.

Between the 2 brands I would do stag without hesitation. Better twist better current reputation.

Tough call as I happen to like both brands. I consider them both under rated. The Stag is closer to the specs you're looking for. But the Armalite is an Armalite.

Armalite lower, and Stag upper!!

I've owned 2 Armalites, a 14.5 and a 10.5 inch. Both were sold to finance my 2 PWS rifles. I also own a Stag lower. My Armalites were 100% reliable and were fairly accurate. The Stag lower has a great factory trigger. The finish on both brands is perfect.

Both are quality manufacturers and I think you would be happy with either. I would go with whichever one is closest to the configuration you are looking for.

I have an Armalite and STAG with 16" barrels. Both very nice rifles and great value.

I'd personally take 20" barrels over 16" but they weren't available when I bought them.

The Armalite is mine and I bought a left handed Stag for my son, perhaps I'll give it to him this month as his 6th birthday present.

Teach him to shoot right handed.
I'm not sure why people want 20 inch AR's, seems excessive to me and I don't think there are any advantages over an 18 inch. They aren't any more accurate and the velocity gains are so small past 18 inch that to me it isn't worth it.
To each their own though, that's just my preference. I like shorter barrels.

What about the twist rates. Would the different rates effect how close to a c7 they would behave? Or could I compensate with the ammo? My understanding is the tighter the twist, the heavier the bullet that can be used correct?

I think Stag's warranty is now not only lifetime, but transferable as well. So lifetime, period. Might help with resale down the road?

Interesting to see if Armalite will be active sponsering shooting matches again. I read they got bought by the same company as Surgeon who is a big sponser of the precision style matches.

How well will both the 1/9 and the 1/7 shoot both 55 grain and 62 grain ammo?

The 55 grain stuff is everywhere, but the 62 grain stuff is what I would rather shoot.

Both twist rates will shoot 55 and 62 without issue.
77gr would be the upper limit of a 1-9" twist rate.

Thanks, did some reading and looks like a 1/9 twist is perfect for 62 and 55.

Looks like i might pick up the Armalite over the Stag. Still thinking though. I have a few weeks before i will post my AR for sale so anything can happen before that.

Well this changes things, found out that the Armalite comes with a heavy profile barrel instead of a Govt profile barrel. Does not look like its as heavy as the one on mine, but still, main idea is I want a lighter, more practical rifle.
