Armor piercing??

They have a hardened steel penetrator inside the jacket. The bullet in this picture is US military M2 AP which was loaded in 30-06 ammo. There are newer versions of AP bullets now with better/harder materials for the penetrator.

And when they mean "hardened steel" they DON'T mean your regular milsurp steel-core rounds .... Those things are mild steel and really don't penetrate any more than regular lead-core rounds. ;)

Being of rare practical use for civvies they are seldom stocked. Soft ammo for hunting, hard military surplus ammo for plinking. Their availability is a matter of supply and demand.

The definition of AP depends on what armor you're referring to. Most if not all centre fire rifle rounds will defeat soft armour(Kevlar or similar P-Aramid fibres). If you're talking about lightly armoured vehicles, hard armour plates, or emplacements, then you would need AP specific ammo such as that described in the thread.

AP is not cheap by any means. If you want .308, you are looking at $10+ a round.
A dealer might have a few boxes but you have to be willing to pay for it. The same goes for ordering. They won't bring one box.
LE/MIL order thousands of rounds of AP at a time. A good idea would be to try and put a piggy-back order onto a dealers next shipment. If they know they have a few interested parties they can add a few boxes (cases).

And I suspect you won't have Dealers posting 'Hey, order your AP from us', just like they don't advertise 'Buy your Armour here'......
