Armor piercing??

Wow, 196 grns, that would be hell on my op-rod wouldn't it? I am also pretty sure "POR"= very expensive. I would definitely like to try some out though.

there is also some 7.62x54r AP/trace floating around the country... i picked a pocket full of it out of a garbage can at the range because it was mixed into a crate someone bought and they dident think shooting it would be a good idea i guess :D

The M855 (SS109) I have in 5.56 is AP ammo. Sort of...

I bought a case for ####s and giggles and as soon as I got it home I pulled the bullet out of the case then used a side cutter to see what the steel core was like.

In my case, the penetrator is a hard steel tip underneath the copper jacket. In this caliber, I read on wikipedia that the goal was to have .223 penetrate steel helmets at 400 yards.

Shooting at a 1" steel gong at the range doesn't produce much of anything. A small dimple in the steel is all I get. (Very small)

The .308 pic posted early in this thread is not like the m855. I have a large lead core with a small steel tip. Does .308 come the other way around with a large steel core with a small lead tip?

The Americans do have a true AP 5.56 round and it is the, Cartridge, 5.56mm, Armor Piercing (AP), M995. The 5.56 AP round penetrates 12 mm armour plate of 300 HB at 100 m.

Here is a info page on the RUAG 7.62X51 AP round, the penetrator appears to have only a copper jacket to engage the rifling, the page is in English and French but there is a good picture of the sectioned round on it. With my limited French it looks like it says it will penetrate 7mm of armour at 525 metres.

turn the bullet around

WW1 and WW2 soldiers discovered that if you pull the bullet and put it back in backwards, you'll actually get better penetration on steel. Don't know if this applies to modern armoured steel, but it worked on vintage armour.
The FMJ bullet, when backwards, was less likely to splinter hitting a hard target, and hence, more bullet energy is concentrated and actually punches thru better

Are armor piercing bullets just FMJ or is there something different about them? I'm talking about 30 cal rifle rounds.......
