Armor

The 3 gun matches I attend.....don't happen on a 2 way range.
Never seen anyone wear any either.

How bad are things in Edmonton?

It comes down to ricochet safety and in some cases, the competitors want to more closely simulate the possible conditions under which you would do this. When I was in The Army we wore our body armour as a matter of course when on the range and when participating in any live fire exercise.

I say if the bloke wants to wear protective gear of the ballistic variety let him. Otherwise I kind of feel like you're the guy who makes fun of people for wearing safety glasses in shop class.

Just a friendly jab, and the OP took it as such. I don't make fun of people, nor do I kid about safety.
I don't care what anyone wears during a competition.
Actually I wish everyone wore armor and tac gear.
In a competition it will just slow you down and make it easier for me to win.

Seeing as I don't know much about armor, I'll end my involvement in this thread.

Seriously???? Are you shooting steel with your rifles???

If body armor is really needed for safety at your matches perhaps the stage design should be revisited!!!

I don't think it's so much about ricochets... LOL!

I'm sure he's referring to a class we've been trying to bring about in WRAS called "Trooper" whereas the shooter needs to wear armor and pack all of his ammo/water with him all day. ie. no trips to the truck to get lunch or more ammo, etc. A true "run what ya brung/close to battlefield conditions" class.

I believe the idea bukwild was to be using a plate carrier with minimum Lvl 3. Seeing as we now have to be registered and cert'd to own body armor in Alberta I'm not sure it's going to be as well taken up as we thought last year pre-armor cert. Get in touch with Sosa or Tex and they'll know more.

At last check, SFRC clarified that level I, II, and IIIa are exempt from the controlled goods. So in Alberta it is unchanged, firearms license or armor license and you're good.

So you've never had a round come back off a rock at your range or a poorly placed shot on a popper... That's fair I suppose. And yes, I have shot rifle at steel, but the rounds hitting the steel angle down into the earth directly in front of the steel. I have, however had rounds come back from gongs and rocks on the range. And I didn't say I was wearing the armour for matches. I was wearing armour whilst training to fight, in The Army. You know, fight how you train and all that. :)

Ahhhhh.....now I get it :)

actually, in the chas 3 gun meets i attended, you HAD to have at least soft armor to compete. Plus, its 3 gun, not pansy ipsc. we dont cheat and use low powered rounds and ninja-fied race guns, neither. ( I know I'll get flamed by someone, but so what)

In BC it is against the law to own or wear body armour. Why? Cuz da boys in da hood aka Surrey only shoot themselves and never innocent bystanders so dere is no need or so our outgoing Premier says. The BC dress code does not include body armour for civilians.

Take Care

Bob

lol if you've been to a 3GunNation match most of the guys at the top are USPSA Master/ Grand Master types. (some from years past but they still rock) and the AR's are looking much like the IPSC Race pistols now.

I've never seen any armor but they have rules for how close you can shoot steel. Most Rifle are over 100 yards, Slugs 50 yards, Shot on steel 5 to 25 yards (but I've shot them as close as 3 feet!) Pistol 7 to 50 yards. I've never had or seen a ricoche at a 3 gun match (yet) but it may be due to the high quality steel they are using (MGM)

At IPSC matches I'm known as the bullet magnet. I've been hit by hundreds of returning rocks some have drawn serious blood but I never thought of getting any body armor since most the returning bits tend to hit my arms or head anything that hit my chest or legs got stopped by what ever I was wearing.
