I've got a nice Arms 18 mount on top of my M14, and a fellow clubmember suggested that I should take out the front 'contact point' hardware (set screw, "contact pad" and such) and get the reciever drilled & tapped to bolt the front of the mount to the reciever, in order to avoid any movement of the mount.

Is that a common operation or it is just a plain waste of time and money?

Put a club to this clubmember!!!! He's smokin' something bad.

He doesn't know what he's talking about.

This third point is used on the arms and the brookfield type (SMith, Armscorp, Sadlak) mounts, I have never heard or seen this mod done, in Canada or in the US.

Just set the mounts the way they are made and be happy.

I'm glad you asked us before doing any work.

About the only thing you should do with the front contact point is make sure that it doesn't touch the handguard. You have two bolted contact points already and the front point provides tension on the mount.

replace the cap screw up front with a set screw so it won't touch the hand guard and your good to go. I would NOT do what your club member suggested, never even heard of that before. Great way to trash a 250 dollar mount and devalue your rifle at the same time if you as me. I bet he's just jealous that you have one and he doesn't!:D

Everyone is right. Don't even consider the drilling and tapping BS recommendation. I'm terribly sorry if any offense is taken from our advise above, but leave it alone. Yes, get a replacement set screw to replace the existing allen head screw. That way you won't have to carve up your front handguard... let the set screw do the job and hidden away from view.

I'm glad as heck that you asked us first !!
