SUNDRE, Alta. — Police in central Alberta believe they have found the remains of a Calgary hunter who had been missing in the bush for three days.

They say the remains have been tentatively identified as that of Don Allan Peters.

The 51-year-old was found in a thickly wooded area about 200 metres from his vehicle.

CTV Calgary reported Wednesday night that police confirmed Mr. Peters was mauled by a bear.

Police say it's unclear whether he was killed by the bear or mauled after his death.

The network also reported bear tracks were seen in the area.

Heard about this on the news.

Poor bugger. Like they said, they don't know if the bear was the cause or not, but it was also freakishly cold outside, something like -25. I'm betting it was the bear because he was only 300 meters from his truck though...:(
 
too bad, a hard way to go! Simpathy to his family. The only consolation,and small at that, is he did not die at a desk. He went doing what he loved and in Gods Country. May HE comfort the family. AJ
 
Rumor has it that he was indeed attacked by a young grizz and managed to get off one shot, missing apparently. We were there Elk hunting until Saturday.
 
I found some Griz tracks in an area just west of Calgary, in the eastern foot hills, a couple of weeks ago. I've never seen Griz in this area before so I have been on higher bear alert for the last couple of weeks when I'm out there. I don't recall a hunter being killed by a Griz in Alberta before, assuming that is what happened.
 
Lotsa politics here because of the moratorium on the grizz hunt. A friend shot a grizz in self defense 2 years ago by Waiporous (8mm Rem mag o.k.?) reported it and helped F&W take it to Cochrane for examination. He was allowed to keep a couple of pics. but warned not to post them on the web. There are a helluva lot more grizzlies out here than any Johnny from the city would dare to admit.
