Assembling sks

I'm starting to think buying 50 yeard old rifles just for the sake of price isn't worth it and that I should infact save my money and buy more expensive modern rifles like the ar-15. (not that I didn't have plans on that before hand; just I didn't realize how much a pain in the ass an older rifle like the sks can be so thought I would get one of those first)

Sounds like you need to find someone to show you how to do it properly. If you post your location I'm sure there is a cgn'er that might be in the area and can help. Mine was tight and difficult to take apart and reassemble but once someone showed me some tricks it is much easier. It is my favorite rifle now.

The SKS is one of the simplest semi auto rifles to disasemble and clean on the market! The only thing simpler would be a bolt gun of some kind! lol

As the previous poster said find someone who owns one to help you out!

I consider myself really handy, but still figured everything out after just watching a couple youtube videos. Dont get frustrated, just be patient.

Remember you are gonna have to take it apart and clean it everytime you use it so you better start practising!

Please, somebody help him out. Like bondjames80 said. If you post your location I'm sure there is a CGNer close by thar will give you a hand. Once you've done it once or twice you won't believe how easy it really is.

all right I got the bolt, bolt carrier, and recoil spring all disassembled now. What I am stuck on now is just the gas system and putting the trigger group in without dislodging the magazine. And also, what do most you guys do for cleaning?

I actually just got everything disassembled; so that part of it is no longer a problem. Now, what should I do to clean all of the metal parts? And what about the stock; is it necessary that I extensively clean this too?

I still think (even though I have never owned one), that the necessary actions to field strip a north american and more modern gun like the AR-15 would be a lot more conspicuous and uniform. (easier to understand and see because more of the steps would be the same as eachother; correct me if I am wrong).

After awhile you will be doing it blindfolded! There is nothing tricky about it. Some parts may be tight but everything comes apart and goes back together without grinding or hammering. Somtimes I pull the bolt back in order to seat the mag more easily. Some SKS need the gas tube to be softly pried out of the gas block. Check the angle on the lever part to make sure it is vertical to allow the the tube to lift out. Make sure the safety is on to facilitate TG removal. Thats about it

I own both and AR-15 and a SKS; the SKS is as easy if not easier to strip than the AR-15.

Either you're doing it wrong, your SKS is really tight, or it's broken. When deaing with Russian rifles it pays to keep in the back of your mind some advice that was given to me: "your rifle was built to be stripped and cleaned by Russian conscripts in the field with a minimum of tools!"

PM me your email and I'll send you a manual in .pdf from an old US importer. Not the most detailed but it shows you basic field stripping with nothing more then a bullet tip.
