I have finally got through to a tech at Ruger who confirms that there is an error in the early manuals for this gun (carry over from Mark II manual) that makes it damn difficult if not impossible to close the mainspring housing. The magazine has to be in place and not removed as the book says.
Through much frustration I discovered this accidentaly. And now after a bit of a debate with Ruger they agree I was right.

The only way the mainspring housing will close on my MarkIII 22/45 is if the magazine is removed. YMMV

You're correct. The 22/45 Mark III model is apparently different than other Mark III's, more like a Mark II I guess. Heck, there may be a few older regular Mark III's out there that are the same. You never know about model changes. They are sending me a new manual which will clarify things for me across the product line.
Thanks for your input.

I have now owned four ruger firearms. I'm not sure what crack they smoke in the design shed down there, but they have ALL been the WEIRDEST firearms to strip and assemble I have ever encountered!

That said - They certainly work!

Hey scotty, those instructions do NOT show the magazine installed as howasan is climing needs to be done. I would like to know as I have the Ruger Mark III (NOT the 22/45 version) and it is a total B@tch to re-assemble.

I had a Mark II for a few years; you could disassemble it without the mag in it. The new Mark III has the foolish magazine disconnect that will not alow you to pull the trigger if the mag is not in it. The problem here is that when you pull out the bolt during disassembly you need to tip the hammer back up into the fired position to get the hammer spring/bolt stop/pain in my a** back in; you need to to pull the trigger to do it and you cannot if the mag is not in it.

I never checked the manual; I had torn my old one down so many times it was just second nature. I will have to see if the gent I bought it from gave me the manual and see if it is buggered up the same as yours.

To reinsert and latch shut the mainspring assembly on a standard Mark III the magazine must be in place. If it is not, you can insert the bolt stop pin in its hole but it will slide back out when you try to latch the assembly shut.
