assessing used shotgun/firearm

With the question so vague... I would say to figure out what you are looking for (like a shotgun) and narrow it down to a type (like a pump, not a semi or O/U) so you can do some research on how it works, where it wears, how people damage them and what used ones are worth.

When buying used actually knowing how it works, like how a double action revolver turns the cylinder, can save you a heap load of trouble on your inspection of the firearm: you know where to look for damage, excessive wear and so on.

Other than that, again being so vague, the bulging ring in a barrel and rust can be bad...
