At what distance to target do you typically shoot?

if you can find a range that allows you to shoot closer do so.

I use the index card method, cheap and available.

shoot only as far and as fast so all shots hit the index card before moving back or speeding up.

Now if you're stuck at 25y. put up an index card and track % of shots hitting it to see your progress. The smaller target helps to focus you and at 25 yards it is still visible.

also shooting empty slugs diplayed on logs at 25yards may help at aiming steady...and is pretty fun too, then going back to bullseye targets seems easier.
Got logs on your gun range do you...:) ?
Someone hard timed me about that I seem to recall... something about against the rules?
Good to see other folks color outside the lines as well

I start close when i get to the range to see were i am shooting, than i move the target out. I also brace my body up against the table/becnh to steady my shoots and i use a two hand grip, just takes time to work up to it. vUsually i just keep it at 25 yardes to 35/4- yards.

For target shooting I used to shoot at 20 yards but lately I shoot at 10 yards. For just hitting my gong with pistols I shoot at about 30 yards.

at my range we just put up a new target backer at 15 meters. we use cor-plast sheeting on a 2x4 frame to staple the targets to and the plastic is almost all shot out now, only 5 months later, while some of the farther sheets are virtually untouched!

i thinks it is invaluable for handgun shooting, and even for beginners shooting .22 rifles to start close and move back when you improve.

to the O.P: maybe you can set up a portable target stand a little closer to the firing line?

Typically around 7-15 yards. Typical action shooting range, occasionally I will practice out to 25m and land virtually all my shots within 10-15" apart

However, when I started, my club at the 25m policy as well, which changed...thank god.,...after it changed, I started doing all my shooting at <10 yards before moving up.

As a new HG shooter, what should I expect at 25yds?

Is 50% on a 14X14 target @ 25yds accepable (for now)?

I'm use to 1.0" @ 200 yds with a rifle, so my HG performance seems rather pathetic to me!

You need to get out side, join the CDTSA,Sheppard range is great, 25yard [yes yards] pistol ,lets you shoot from contact out to 25yds.

Only down side is weather, which is only bad if you made of suger.:p

i shoot from 0 all the way out to 100 meters with my 45( needs a lot of holdover out there)

I only shoot from 10 yards and in. And 10 is pushing it. I have a Sig 226 Blackwater and just sold my 2 Glocks. I couldn't hit anything with the Glocks, but the Sig is awesome.

Using a man-sized silhouette target, I can keep them all on the paper at 7 and less, but once I get to 10 yards, I'm usually missing 3-4 out of 10 off the paper.

I see some guys can get every shot on the target at 25 yards. I don't know how they do that....

I'm happy getting 6"-8" groups at 25 yards with my ar-15.

I am also new to pistol , I fired my first 1300 round this week end, with my not like new anymore Ruger MKIII 22/45 and yes my thumbs hurt .
At my range you can shoot sitting on the bench (with a barrel rest or not) or standing. The position make a bit difference. Nobody is mentioning there shooting position.
at 30 Ft I was getting 4-5 inch group hitting target 99% of the time.
at 75 Ft I was gettign 8" group hiting target 70% of the time.
this is in standing position

If I am at the bench my best group was 2 inch at 30 ft and 5" at 60ft
Also all depends how long you take your time to shot, concentration, weather ...
I had more fun doing my shi** groups then when I was going for precision, After all we are doing this for fun :ar15:

Hi,

I'm new to hand gunning.

At what distance do you typically shoot at?

The range I attend demands a min of 25yds. At 25yds, I'm putting 50% of my shots on a 14" X 14" target and don't seem to be getting any better.

Been out 5 times so far (total of 300 rounds of 9mm and an equal amount of 22cal fired).

Is this to be expected?

Thanks

Find a new range. Pistols should be shot at all ranges from contact to 25 yards. PPC Duty pistol course of fire is a good "all-around shooter" builder, with firing at 3-5-7-15 and 25 yards, both strong and week handed in multiple positions. This may seem obvious but it's easier to develope skills at close range before working back to 25 yards.

A big target like a 14 x 14 at 25 yards is like a 7x7 at 12 yards. You definetly need some practice and perhaps some help with the grip on your gun. But you may also be dealing with some flinch issues. By any chance do you manage better with the .22? If you do then likely there's some flinch issues or your grip isn't supporting the gun well enough.

Shooting the .22 more and learning to not anticipate the BANG! will help a lot. Try to pull the trigger all the way through past the firing point. Using a smooth follow through seems to help with the whole zen thing. The low recoil of the .22 aids this self control. As I've read in a few places the firing of the gun should come as a surprise each and every time that is neither expected nor anticipated.

As for some possible help with your grip here's the two items that helped me the most.

And yeah, find a range that allows targets from touching the barrel out to 25'ish yards. It's silly that a hand gun range mandates targets at no closer than 25. Makes me think a rifle only shooter set up that nonsense.
