As Nikorette states - a Vulcan 20mm will do... now THAT will kill, skin, butcher and make deer-burger all in one (or 6) shot.

Now, even though there was no expansion, the velocity of the bullet would have created alot of energy release into the soft tissues of the body cavity. Since Kinetice Energy (KE) is equal to 1/2 the mass (of the bullet) times the velocity squared (1/2 MV(2)) - so that bullet would have imparted a great deal of its kinetic energy into the soft tissue dealing alot of pressure to the surrounding organs and helping to deliver the fatal blow. Had it hit bone, then all of the energy would have been imparted with greater tissue damage. Just look at Nikorette's avatar for a sample.

On a hijack note, I sure wish it were permissible to track downed animals with dogs here in AB. It would sure increase the odds of recovery in many cases.

AFAIK ...... it's still legal to hunt deer with hounds in Ont. My father did it all the time.

try a .308 caliber and stop shooting all the small deer!{joking} try a different bullet i have had the same results as you have mentioned at close range with smaller calibers..270 and under.with factory loads only .the factory loads seem to be loaded to the maximum cup and are really fast.i hand load so i slowed it down a touch 100 fps and then went to a heavier bullet 165 grns.problem solved! good expansion and stopping power at close range.a little more drop but i can live with it.if sticking with factory loads maybe just try a heavier grain bullet or shoot for bone with a premium bullet to put it down.nice deer! i am using a 3006 now .

I think you find that a slower velocity may cause less expansion in a conventional bullet, all else being equal. Penetration would be good, but the bullets would be less frangible at slower speeds.

A 130 grain hollow point out of your .270 will make sure there is instant expansion. The Remington Core-Lokt is a tough bullet,maybe you would be better served by a softer Speer or Sierra.

ive seen a few bullets pass thorugh a deer when it doesnt stike any solid bone both with core-lokt ammo and winchester ammo as well it might not create the "bang-flop" type of kill every time but in all cases the deer was dead within 50 yards, As long as shot placement is half decent the bullet will do its job.

At the risk of hijacking my own thread; I just found out that one of the hounds you see in my pic was recently killed by a car. I had mixed feelings about that dog. While he did chase the buck to me, he was also a mean S.O.B. that couldn't be trusted not to take a bite out of ya!
