They spotted some cougars in Vancouver and now i'm getting scared.
They usually state for use in remote areas. Discharge only legal in defense of life. This means no target practice while in the field
I'm more worried about the wildlife I see on East Hastings!

I applied in August and got mine a couple of weeks ago. I faxed in the application, then towards the middle of October they started getting regular phone calls from me. I'm glad you gave me a heads up about how much lead time I might need to renew.

It's good to have it current in case I get sent on a job on short notice. I just hope that I can get a new province/territory added quickly since this ATC is currently for BC only.

As far as adding provinces, If you have a BC permit, you can get YT added easy, since YT is administered under BC. NT is administered under Alberta, so it is a similar situation, as is NU and Manitoba. Outside of these type of additions, you generally have to apply to that province/territories CFO, although if you hold a current ATC, I'd think they could fastrack you a little
Took me three days, after I heard I was headed up north to Corey Camp and Anyox to do some GPS surveys. I don't know whether that was because my name is vaguely familiar around there or what. Perhaps it is the volume of the stuff I sent in... When I saw the "shooting proficiency" bit in the new ATC's, my first thought was "you gotta be s**ttin' me". I think proficency is a good idea, y'unnerstand, but without any standards or anything, you could have some hyper IPSC range officer guy on the one hand making unreasonable demands on performance, and on the other hand have a club range officer who had never fired a handgun assessing your proficiency on the other.geologist said:I applied for my ATC in early May. Anyways, I told Melissa I could never get that goofiness done in time before I had to be on the plane, so she told me to send what I had. So I piled up EVERYTHIN
police firearms instructor stuff, military small arms, CFSC/CRFSC instructor certificates, old CPCA membership cards, etc and stuffed them all in the fax machine. Anyways, Melissa came through like the champ she is, and I had my permit in time for the trip north. BC/Yukon, but told me nothing else in case I needed it. Then the guy I was doing the contract with said their would be no bears and firearms might not be welcome. Then I got onsite and was picked up by rgv here... so much for the gun phobia in camp BS. So much for the "no bears"
People like Melissa are actually very, very bad for us. They are so pleasant, so efficient, so helpful, and so likeable that you almost get lulled to sleep about the fact you are dealing with GAWDAWEFUL GUN CONTROL. What I wish we had was malicious bastards like Dennis Johnson staffing every single position in the CFO's office. Now THAT would get the indifferent gun owners off their asses in a hurry. I got all the firearms listed that I asked for, but lots of conditions about open carry, use only for defence, etc and so forth.
Just in case this breaks into another bear defense thread, let me get my licks in first: after the size of Fuzzy that we were running into up there, I have decided I am going to buy a Glock 20C and stuff it with those Double Tap 200 grain jobs at 1300 fps. My current carry pistol seemed... inadequate. I still much prefer a shotgun, but... Anyone got one of those Tupperware Specials for sale?
Anyways, I suppose then I will find out how hard it is to get a permit amended. I suspect the ever-efficient Melissa will make it happen in a day.

A pal of mine applied for his ATC a couple of weeks before I did. For the proficiency part, they told him to get a letter from me, which I wrote without hesitation - this guy can shoot, and knows bears. When I sent mine in, I included 3 targets fired at 10, 15, and 25 yards and let them draw their own conclusions. In mid October I decided it would be beneficial to have my ATC extended to Nunavut, so I faxed in the request, and when it came sure enough it was for both Manitoba and Nunavut. I just got one gun listed on it however, and I may want to have a second to cover me in case that gun has a breakage I cannot fix myself.
I just had Melissa change my ATC by removing my 44mag that I sold and including my new new SRH 454 Casull.
It took a bit longer than I thought it would though to get the changes done but only by a couple of days.
Kathy the other main girls in the office was very helpful during the entire process. She also mentioned in one of our conversations that she is totally for the long gun registry and disapproves of dismantling it. She's not anti gun but believes all firearms should be registered. I tried sharing my views and pointed out that the long gun registry has done nothing to stop criminals from using firearms but she was very closed minded about it like so many others that I have encountered lately.
They have been working on all of the Brinks drivers carry permits lately and have been very busy trying to get them all done which slowed them down on some of our applications.
Thanks for the heads up on the applications when my son comes home from college next month we are going to start the process to get him his ATC.
He is taking some geology courses and want to work with me next year.

I'm not sure there's much of a chance phoning Melissa once a day to try and speed things up. In all my dealings with her (and speaking with others), she has seemed to bend over backwards trying to help and minimize the annoyance. You might ask her WHY the delay, however...geologist said:

I include everything that I can in my application.
I have a fairly severe hearing loss and include my doctors letter stating this as well. I also include that I shoot Cowboy Action and that I have passed the BB course as well.
In other words over supply them with info to show how qualified you are.

I also have to add a thanks to Melissa. She helped me a great deal in expiditing my ATC. The CFO was a little slow in responding but she worked her magic and made it happen.
