ATF Trying To Ban AR-15 Ammo

I could see an impact. Russian and European ammo is irrelevant they don't make XM855. I am not a big fan of shooting steel case ammo in my ar15s. The way I see it, it could be good or bad for Canadian shooters. Lets say there is an out and out ban on 855 ammo in the US, but they still allow surplus to be exported. Good for us now the market has gotten a lot smaller for the xm855 and we could see it cheaper due to lower demand. XM 193 of course would go up due to a higher demand in the US. Option 2 the US bans 855 and prohibits its export, all those shooters will have to switch to new ammo, due to higher demand on other .223 style ammo we see increased prices across the board !

All Nato armies use SS109. In the US it's designation is M855 so potentially it can be sourced from many countries. Israel and South Korea also produce it and I am sure that IMI would like revenue or PMC.

I understand all of that. But all those people who regularly buy and shoot 855 (in the US) will be shooting other types of 5.56 thus driving up the price. Supply/demand. If all those people start shooting reg 55 grain .223 AE there will be more demand and less supply, and the price will rise. I'm not stating we will not see any 855 here anymore, Canada Ammo has PMC 855 in stock and is selling it now.

To put it more simply

855 gets banned in the US but the over runs are allowed to be sold out of country. We should get cheaper than normal 855 due to the market shrinking. But other .223/5.56 will rise due to higher demand from those shooters in the US who will have to switch. Cheaper 855 kind of a win but not if the rest of the 5.56 goes up in price.

OR

855 gets banned in the US and isn't allowed to be exported. We will be stuck getting our 855 from over seas. PMC (not a big deal). That's all fine and dandy but you still have a higher demand in the US for the rest of the .223/5.56 on the market due to one type being banned.

As soon as the notice of BATFE intent to ban sales of M855 came out the buying frenzy started here in the USA at least in the states where it was allowed. Supposedly one dealer in Prescott AZ near where I live sold out his inventory of 80000 rounds over the weekend and all the big online sites sold out in a day or less. Got lucky enough to get a case of 1000 but got in just in time 3 hours after the NRA announced the intent to ban. There are alternatives of course -Tula, Prvi Partisan, non-penetrator 62 grain - but the most desirable is the real Lake City stuff prized for its reliability and ability to penetrate in SHTF scenarios. It sold at a premium over other foreign produced M855/SS109 even before the ban plan announcement.

If you think there is going to be cheap ammo here keep dreaming... There will be a buying frenzy happening in the US and we will get the left overs. Look at the last buying frenzy. How many Canadian dealer got all the ammo they ordered. Very few. I know some that ordered ammo 2 years ago at SHOT and still haven't received what they ordered. Read the AFT proposal, they want to band the export of it too.

On another note, the Federal .62gr I have see is all head stamped LC(Lake city arsenal) and it's dated last year was the newest I seen.
