New to rifle optics and I am trying to make a decision between the Athlon Talos BTR Tactical 4-14x44 APLR2 Tactical FFP IR Mil and the Vortex Diamondback 4-16x44 FFP EBR-2C MRAD. It will be going on a Savage B22 Precision .22lr. Anyone with feedback on these two options and ideally a direct comparison?

No experience with the Vortex but I did briefly have an early Athlon Talos BTR 4-14. I initially put it on an old .308 (that still shot well) but with the Athlon on, it shot terrible groups while zeroing. I tested elevation and windage and elevation tracked good but windage was way off. Put it on a .22 and just used the reticle to hold for wind. The turrets are terrible as well. Ended up punting it when I decided the .22 was accurate enough to deserve a decent scope. I've never had another scope in that price range so I don't have much to compare it to but I think you really get what you pay for with the lower end optics.

Appreciate the feedback. After a few days of no response on this thread, before the second wave of responses here and being impatient and wanting to get the new rifle set up I went ahead and decided to give the Talos a chance. I am completely new to rifle and rifle optics but got it setup pretty quick with the help of a friend, making quick 1 hole ragged groups at 50 on a hugely windy day. With that set it spent the day working over the gopher population with great success.

Again my feedback is based on zero experience, but the Turrets have nice crisp tactile clicks and the glass seems really nice to me. Now to learn as much as I can about stretching this out and possibly rimfire PRS stuff. Hopefully I'll get some decent mileage out of this one before I feel the need to upgrade.

Glad you are enjoying the Talos...

You will be even happier when you move to the Argos BTR... and blown away when you get to the midas tac family.

but if the budget allows, you really want to save for the Ares ETR.
