It was brought up in another thread that Alberta Tactical is in the very near future going to be producing our own custom actions. It was suggested, rightfully, that a hijack of the thread was going on, so here is the low down.

The actions will be stainless steel, I have studied all of the better actions and selected what I believe to be the strongest points of each and am incorporating thses into the ATRS actions.
In order to keep things as simple as possible, parts like triggers, firing pins and basic action configuration will be very 700ish.
The actions will be 1.350" dia which is heavier action wall thickness tha the 700s, the .750" dia bolt is also thicker.
The bolts will be 1 pc from a solid billet of CM steel, sport AR15 type extractors, plunger type ejectors and be coned ala M70 Win. Still 2 a lug design. The ejection port will be longer than the 700 by about 1/2" and the tenon of the action 1.40" long 18TPI.
Raila and recoil lugs will be pinned, and the rails held down with 6 8x40 screws, this is so we can swap rails for flat to plus 60 moa rails with ease.
The actions will be supplied with Jewel triggers, side type safety ala 700s.
Seekins bottom metal and detachable mags are standard, but single shot versions can be made.
The actions will be available in Right bolt Right port, Right bolt Left port, Left bolt Left port and Left bolt Right port, so I think we have every possibilty covered.
Only 3 action sizes are in the plan, 1 that is slightly longer than s/a 700 , 1 that is longer than L/A700 and 1 for the 408s, with possibly a 50 down the road at some point.
These actions will be Extremely tight tolerance, the plan is to be on the same plane as Nesika, Bat et al.
Projected price with pictinny rail, pinned in place recoil lug, Jewel trigger and bottom metal/mag is under $2500.00

These are prototype photos only, but you get the drift.

Very nice! That looks like a great design, and I am looking forward to more posts on this. If they are slightly longer than a sa or la, how much modification of the stock will need to be done to accomondate them?

Don't know about you guy's but $ 2500.00 for an action
and I wouldn't want to be trying to sell them when you
can get a Barnard for $ 1000.00

Very nice!!!!

Good job Rick.

I think your about to become swamped if your not already.

Think you'll have something for us to look at (maby see it shoot) before Mutts sniper shoot.

Dave

Will the .408 action be a repeater or single shot.

...Not if you've priced out a BAT, Kelbly Panda or Nesika in Canada lately, however much of the cost is associated with importation.

yet I know what you mean when you even compare it with company like AI where a 338 Lapua rifles will cost around $7000, and yet much of the cost of those action are due to importation, but there are no importation here is there?

Barnard is a damned fine action, but it's different. Cost is not always the deciding factor in selecting an action. Barnards are blued CM steel as standard and these are stainless. Barnards are single-shot, and these are repeating. When you add the cost of a rail and trigger with the Barnards, the cost is a bit more than a grand. I reiterate, they are absolutely fantastic actions, but these have different applications and features.

Yes but a little over a grand with a trigger and rail for a Barnard still does not equal $2500;)

The action building situation in Canada is going to get very exciting... there is a collaboration between a couple of fellows in BC with extensive CNC and gunsmithing backgrounds, who are building a 3-lug custom target/BR/F-Class action that is "700 friendly" and with a dimensional profile loosely similar to the Surgeon.

No idea on predicted price or anything like that, but it is nice to see Canadians rising to the challenge.

It definitely sounds like a lot of money at first but when you can buy a donnor 700 action for say $700 in comparison, you're really getting nothing.
Mag systems are around $500 - $600 alone
Jewel triggers $325
Rail $135
Tubb lug $100 or so.

Now your $700 action just got you up to $1700 - $1800

Creeping decimalism for sure

So many of the mags systems out there are great in design but I don't know a single reloader that doesn't want to get their bullets as close to the lands as possible and that always compromises mag use unfortunately.

Cool action Rick! Good for you! It's great to see guys in Canada starting to turn it on. Probably see a few of those floating around Summerland next year:). fred

I can't think of a good enough reason to spend tons of extra money on a detachable magazine for a bolt action rifle of all things. If I need that kind of capability, semi-autos will fill that role quite nicely.

In a rifle devoted strictly to tactical rifle matches where there's plenty of run & gun field type shooting, I can see it being a definite advantage. However, how many of those types of matches do we have here in Canada? Unfortunately, precious few.

In the end, it's whatever floats yer boat.

I sent Rick a deposit a few weeks ago, so I expect I'll be among the first to get a rifle with his new action.

My first precision rifle, after a lot of emails back and forth with Rick, presently is as follows...
• ATRS Action, configured with left handed bolt, extended bolt handle, and right side port
• Jewel trigger, set at 2 pounds
• McMillan A5 stock, with the built-in cheek rest, in black
• Recoil Suppressor in stock
• VBull bottom metal with 10 round AI magazine
• Versapod bipod
• Rock Creek .308 barrel, 26in. long, 1 in 10 twist rate.
• Black Cerrocoat on all metal to match the colour of the A5 stock
• Nightforce scope, 8-32x56mm, reticle yet to be determined
