ATRS Modern Sporter build

After getting a MV I figured I had pretty much found my favourite NR rifle, but I still hadn't tried an ACR. I've tried many of the other NR options, so I figured I'd get one to round out my first hand experience of NR options. It also has quite a bit of hype on these forums.

Can't say I was very impressed, the XCR comp I had prior had ergos that were in the same location.. yet better, not to mention it was far lighter, and both rifles had lightweight barrels. The ACR I had wouldn't even drop free metal mags, not to mention polymer, and the bolt catch was not as smooth as the XCR. The handguard of the XCR was also much better and nice and slim. I know I can drop 3-400 on an aftermarket RPM handguard that is nice and slim and lighter, but tbh the ACR just had no click with me and I didn't see the benefit of upgrading a rifle that would still lack that feeling of my MV.

The ACR is an ok rifle, but if I had to choose between an AR15 and an ACR, I would still take an AR15. Plus with all of the aftermarket on AR15s you can easily add most benefits an ACR has to an AR. And if I had to choose between an XCR and ACR, I would definitely take a new gen XCR.

but that's just my opinion

Well took a different direction with my build. Half the stuff I ordered was on B/O so I decided to switch up some components.

They had all this stuff in stock  and it fit on 2 orders :)

Just a couple of things too be aware of. I’ve seen two different people have their Battle Arms safeties come apart at courses. Even though the screws for the safety levers were loctited on. I thought it was user installed error. Then mine came apart on a course. I don’t use any safety that requires screws on a ‘training’ rifle. I prefer the Radian or Troy safety with it detent style system to secure the levers. I would make an exception for a hunting rifle that will not have the safety turned on/off thousands of times like a training rifle would.

And be aware the V7 ultra-lightweight aluminum takedown / pivot pins can wear out fairly quickly just due to them being aluminum. I have a worn out set to prove this.

First time I see this reported but hardly surprising. I bought their investment cast bolt hold open for future build but I went with USGI detents and pins. The weight savings didn't jive with the additional cost.

What’s everyone doing for sights / optics.

I don’t think I’m bothering with irons. I’d like an Elcan spectre but it’s way out of price range.

Anyone care to chime in.

It's no different than any other black rifle. It depends on what you plan to use it for primarily and what your budget is.
I would probably go with a Hi-Lux CMR from Wolverine if you want a variable 1-4 in the $400 price range but if you can spend more then there really are too many options to say without you narrowing it down a bit with some more details of use and cost.

Good to know, Ill order something else instead :)

Where they the BAD-ASS safeties or the BAD-CASS ones?

This was several years ago. It was the BAD-ASS safeties that came apart. I now see they have a ‘improved’ version the BAD-CASS. It looks like it should fix the problems I witnessed. I’ll still stick with my Radian Talon & Troy safeties though. A screw can’t come loose if it does not exist.

I haven’t decided yet myself. I’m leaning towards a Primary Arms 1-8 platinum scope for the 5.56 upper. I’ll probably run a Vortex Razor HD LH 3-15x42 with the HSR-4 reticle on the 6.5grendel for hunting. I just wish it was in mils instead of MOA

Well this is phucked, Brownells didnt ship the Lightweight bolt in my order :-(

So I ordered a different one and added a couple of things.

Radian Weapons ambidextrous safety selector
Battle Arms Enhanced Hardened steel pins
Brownells Chrome M16 Bolt Carrier Group

SFRC just shipped my NEA stripped AR sets they had on sale :) It will hold me over until MV-s comes out...lol...
