ATRS Modern Sporter... Some Initial Observations

Meh, takes 2 seconds extra to put the upper and lower together. It's an inconvenience at best, nothing more.
It's not like little pieces are going to go flying when you take it apart.

What are the options? The only one I was aware of is the JP captured spring system. I have one in my MH but don't care enough to spend the money to fix this for how little it bothers me. I could also just go back to the carbine tube and different stock to have the retainer pin work again.

The 3 options were to.... a) get a screaming deal on a jp silent capture spring. [was a limited time offer]
b) we'd turn down the collar on a rifle length tube or UBR tube, no charge.
c) be moved into the second production run where this won't be an issue.

If I see one at the range I will ask to check it out. Otherwise looking to see what Angryeyebrows thinks. What he described tells me he's had training with double feed drills as that is the exact time you would run into that issue. That and proving your carbine empty on the line. Just making sure it's not a concern if I plan on building an AR like carbine and running it properly.

Wondering if a different charging handle would mitigate any of this etc. If so, then it's not really much of an issue to me. If not, well then yes I will wait and see myself, eventually.

I'm hoping to get a chance tomorrow to make a quick video showing it, but it's going to be difficult to illustrate exactly... The best I can describe what they're referring to is that it almost "feels like a small detent" when the charge handle is in the full reverse, and you need to push it past and then it slides home.

Yes I have training, and a bit of time behind an AR. Like I said above, it’s more of an annoyance, and if push comes to shove, you can work the drills. Ultimately, I’ve decided it’s not a show stopper. I’d prefer it wasn’t there, but then again I’d prefer the design allowed for the upper and lower to hinge open too.

My charging handle is a Raptor by AXTS. They are pretty popular, and quite expensive. I would consider it a high-end part, so I’m not sure if there will be a handle that performs any better. Best advice, is handle one for yourself.

Not knocking your charging handle, I originally planned to run a Raptor LT, right up until I touched a geiselle charging handle and well... there was no going back.

I’m familiar with the Raptor charging handle. Very nice. However I do recall it being a slight bit different than regular spec. Mine were a tight fit for my ADCOR uppers.

In a perfect world I could buy every firearm and test it out myself. Unfortunately I’m not in a financial position for that to happen. Hence why I read these threads and try to research a product before buying. Even then you can still lose out. If I get a chance to check one out, I will do so. For now I think I will stay in research mode a bit longer.

Again thanks for the info.

That would be great! Thank you.

When are your drills not aggressive or better put done with a sense of purpose.....

Lol. That’s right. As long as you always do your drills with a sense of purpose, you’ll be fine.

Yes. This is a fairly apt discription. With mine it takes a bit of force. I’ll try and get a vid too.

Geissele makes some awesome kit. Was gonna buy one of their handles, but decided to hold off and prioritize. It’s on the list though.

Mine's pretty worked in, but regardless, I’m sure the tabs are fairly standard in both dimension, and location. I’ll snag a mil-spec one from a CC rifle and see how it performs.

So we stole our shop foreman off the machines for a bit of filming and a quick explanation of the charging handle systems. Hopefully this answers any questions anyone might have on this topic. I'm glad you guys made the video as I wasn't quite following what all the hubbub was about. For me this is a complete non-issue because the only time it will be noticed is during the action of returning the charging handle to the forward position after manually locking the action open.

This is one of those things you have to chalk up to a direct result of not being an AR and really has no bearing on the ergonomics or reliability of the platform. It is just a small quirk that differentiates it due to the difference in design.

Thanks for the video. Clears up the explanation as to why the CH track can't change.

Mine Raptor takes a little more force than that, enough that you couldn't easily do it with on finger, but it's exactly what is happening. Perhaps different handles will be effected differently. Again, it's annoying, but totally workable.

Sharp corners on the magwell hold is a big problem for me. I hope that is corrected on the next run?

You lost me on the wording... "corrected" implies it's incorrect, and now I'm both triggered AND offended! ;-)

We're looking into a few options and always looking to improve upon our products, but nothing is decided at this time. I have a couple of ideas to keep our "look" yet ease the points of contact at the front but until we start on lowers it'll be hard to say definitively what changes may or may not happen.

In other news, we have just taken another large shipment of forward assist upper receivers up to anodizing today, and by my count should have the entire first production run completely filled (SS upper, FA upper, Lowers) after these are done in 1-3 weeks. The first ones (small batch so nobody get your hopes up) should be arriving back here tomorrow and I'm aiming to have photos up by the end of the day tomorrow.

Great news. I guess it's time to start shipping parts.

At least your receiver set has a magwell to grab ahold of... :stirthepot2:

I just ordered a second upper for mine.
I sure hope this deal goes like my T-81 order where I got mine a month before the guys that ordered a year before me

Perfect. Now it makes sense. Ya as Angryeyebrows mentioned, looks minor. It looks like a non issue.

What do you cats recommend for a 15” rail? The BCM MCMR is nice and light, but sure has a lot of flex when it gets out there.

Odin O2 Lite is strong and lightweight.....and ###y.
I have a 19" HBAR profile IBI on it in 224 Valkyrie
