ATRS Sheep Hunting Rifle...

its crazy. this and another forum that i shared this beautiful rifle on had people boo hooing the gun. I personally could careless. "A lion (and his new .280AI) never loose sleep over the opinions of sheep"

Apparently many folks were not taught the simple "if you can't say anything nice, shut your pie hole" as kids.
I still maintain that the internet and especially social media will be the downfall of society.

The OP posted a picture of his new rifle in an open forum on hunting rifles. That's fair game for whatever discussion/commentary it may generate. Never said it wasn't a nice gun, just shockingly heavy for the components.

If that bothers him or you, grow a thicker skin and shut your pie hole. We all can't like the same gear and I couldn't care less what anyone thinks of my sh*t, let alone strangers on the Internet. I'll post whatever I like, good, bad or indifferent. If someone wants to share, be prepared for something other than praise.

So how exactly should the components weigh less than they do? Its not like we added weight to any of the components. A 700 long action weighs what it weighs unless additional machine work is requested to remove metal. A CFW barrel is what it is and fluting is not an option on these barrels. The stock is as light as was requested.

I opened this thinking it was the Modern Hunter.

Neat rifle. Not my cup of tea, I've never understood the 280AI.

Nice gun!
What are benefits of a carbon fibre barrel?

Same or more rigidity as a conventional barrel of the same profile but 40% less weight. So essentially a heavy varmint type contour that weighs what a pencil thin profile conventional barrel weighs.
Heat dissipation is unreal! They get hot quite quickly but cool very fast compared to conventional steel barrels.
Working up load development seems easier as the harmonics appear to be very forgiving, or I just got real lucky 4 times in a row.
Proof claims better barrel life but frankly I believe that to be marginal and extremely hard to document unless you have tons of money to do an A-B test effectively wearing out 2 new barrels in short order.
Down side is cost. A CFW barrel is just over double the cost of a conventional stainless match grade barrel.

Never mind the critics, they are a dime a dozen, I like it and I'm sure you do too.
I would love to see your range report though, interested to see how that barrel performs.
As for the weight, don't worry you'll get around that if you adjust your gear to allow.
I have packed heavier rifles than that in nasty stuff.

By the way, Thanks for sharing those pictures with us..

my T/C encore is 7 lb with the scope but it has a short barrel and a bit of added weight is a good thing with really short rifles .
5.5 lb is wicked for a bolt gun I mite have to think about one for next year

How do all those ultralight bits add up to such a heavy "ultralight" rifle? Is ATRS new at building this type of gun?

Patrick

This build is more about quality components than ultra light weight... it's hard to find a stock that is lighter than a factory Tupperware, but the McMillan is not even in the same category when you compare rigidity. The carbon fiber barrel is roughly the same weight as a sporter barrel but it is bull profile...very nice rifle that ought to drive tacks

Not trolling and hopefully the OP doesn't get offended by a slight derail.

Have you guys done much in the way of true ultralights? I'm always looking for whats available in this area as options are quite limited. And can carbon barrels be done with a light interior sleeve to finish at more of a sporter contour, or do they need to be built to varmint profile?

Not trying to dump on the OP'S rifle. I actually really like it. Very practical hunting rig and it's clearly going to be a shooter. However, that barrel must be heavy. A Rem 700 LA in a McEdge should weigh 6-6.3 lbs with a mountain contour barrel of 22"-24" (no flutes). (Assuming the OP's stock has the edge fill). It's obviously lighter than a varmint contour steel barrel, but it sure doesn't weigh the same as a mountain contour.

That is a sweet rifle man. You have me green with envy. That's pretty much the build I will be going for after my barrel is shot out. Lets see a range report! Not that I am expecting to see much space between the holes....

It's a nice rifle and I am glad you are happy with it...... In regards to the negativity, it was posted as a sheep rifle...... You can't expect to post an 8 pound plus rifle in "hunting and sporting arms" and not ft challenged on what makes it a sheep rifle......

From Proofs site, barrel dimensions and weights.

In our experience the same contour barrels weigh 40% less with the CFW
