Have you guys done much in the way of true ultralights? I'm always looking for whats available in this area as options are quite limited. And can carbon barrels be done with a light interior sleeve to finish at more of a sporter contour, or do they need to be built to varmint profile?

Although we do not specialize in ultra lite rifles we have built some. Proof does offer what they call a "Sendero light" profile that is more slender and slightly lighter, but it is still .800" at the muzzle, where a #2 conventional barrel is closer to .600" and just an ounce or 2 lighter, BUT you give up the repeat-ability of POI with repeated shots fired in succession.

Like all tools they can be tailored to a specific task, with pros and cons.

Nope...... Can't say I have experience there........ And I don't doubt for a second that if OP lugs the rifle up a mountain in sheep country and is presented with a shot that he will connect........ And good for him....

Doesn't mean that his rifle is ideal for a sheep hunt....... Nor does it mean his rifle is a "sheep rile".....

I personally think it's a very nice rifle, but don't be surprised at the reaction. Most folk would not expect a 8.5lb rifle after reading the "Sheep Hunting Rifle" part in the thread title. I expected a lightweight rifle was going to be featured in the post.
 
Oh for Christ sakes already...if the op takes his rifle sheep hunting and whether or kills a sheep, its his damn Sheep rifle regardless of what others think...to the OP, nice rifle.... enjoy and have fun! :)

But a man that go up a mountain looking for gold and com down with a sheep is all right by me in joy your rifle
 
Nice rifle OP, the carbon fiber barrel gives it a great look.

Man the Forums have been brutal lately with the negativity.......... Just a bunch of pissin' and moaning about stupid things.

I'm just as guilty but we're starting to sound like a bunch of women at Starbucks.


Good thing hunting season is just around the corner.

I used to pack a 9 lb rifle into the mountains for sheep. Although I used the rifle for hunting sheep, I never refered to it as a "sheep rifle." It was just a do everything rifle. Last year I bought a rifle specifically for sheep hunting. It weighs just a squeak over 6 lbs scoped. I call it my sheep rifle because that is what I bought it for, it's my idea of an ideal sheep rifle. It is really just semantics though. I have a coworker with a 10 lb rifle he bought specifically for sheep hunting. To him it's a sheep rifle. When one hears "sheep rifle" they think light weight, hence some backlash to the OP's rifle. In reality it definitly means differnet things to different people. Personally I would pay a lot of money to cut 4 lbs off my pack weight. I also hunt completley on foot, those who set up a spike camp with horses or a quad may have different priorities. Horses for corses.
 
Fact: I have seen sheep killed with 9lb rifles. That makes them sheep rifles.

Opinion: I think a sheep rifle should weigh less than 7lbs. Making them good ideas but still pretend.

Do you see the difference?

Fact: I have seen people chop kindling with an 8 pound maul....

It did the trick, but not even close to the best tool for the job... And therefore I would not call an 8 pound mall a kindling chopper, but maybe you do and that's cool too :)

Nobody said sheep could not be harvested with a 9 pound rifle.... But in my OPINION, which by the way I am as entitled as anyone else on this board to express, I think a lighter rifle would be more suitable for mountain work... We are after all talking about a group known for shaving weight from their gear in every way possible..... But, hopefully the OP takes his gun out and shoots many sheep with it and enjoys owning it..... I think it's a pretty cool build regardless...
