I just got a new Remington 597. (first .22 semi auto) I love it.
Any suggestions for upgrades. (inexpensive scope, bi pod, etc.)
I do have a slight vision problem. I am liking the idea of a red dot scope, but don't know how far out that would be affective.
I can hit a orange golf ball at 25 yards with the open sights, but want to use it for gophers and cans when the snow melts. (50 to 100 yards.)

I have a 597. I put a cheep Bass pro brand (red head) scope, rocky mount bi-pod on it and got a few 30 round mags. I also got a new hammer and an extractor to solve the stove piping problem I was having. I have no problems hitting my target in its current set up.

Theres a few little things you can do. Add scope of choice with adjustable objective for parallax, and a bipod. Free float the barrel. An aftermarket target hammer from Volquartzen( or do your own trigger). Back out the guide rod screws between 1/4 and 1/2 turn from tight. Aluminum tape between the stock and receiver. Add key stock to the fore end for a bit of stiffness and weight. Polish all internals.

The best upgrade for the 597 is without a doubt the Volquartsen exact edge extractor. Ive got a Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 AO on mine. If you go to rimfirecentral.com they have a 597 forum where I picked up tons of useful info about tuning the 597. Enjoy your new rifle.
