If I purchase a firearm am I allowed to take it to the range with the transfer slip or do I need to wait for the proper registration papers to come in?

Proper registration certificate, transfer slip doesnt work. Usually they show up about a week later here in Ontario

Technically you need the proper registration, that being said almost everybody I know takes their new restricted's to the range with just the transfer approval. The information on the transfer approval is the same on the registration, make, model, serial number and registration number.

Just my .02 cents, do so at your own risk.

Is this another case of various CFO offices making stuff up as they go along? Our CFO says that the transfer notification acts as your registration certificate for transport purposes until the permanent certificate arrives from Ottawa.

Pretty much, i have asked the question to the nice ladies at the cfo office and thats what i was told.
Like outlander said i am sure lots of people have taken them out without the cert but thats their choice.

Just like the statt/post office package pickup or the carrying the blank paper showing no restrictions with your license question that always comes up. :)

Makes you wonder why they even bother with issuing the registration when the transfer approval shows the same thing (proof of registration for a specific restricted firearm)

Like a lot of questions about firearms regulations the answer that is closest to the truth is probably something like "it depends/maybe/who knows"

I went through this within the past couple of weeks. Got home and phoned the CFO, got the STT and the transfer certificate emailed. The transfer certificate stated the actual would follow in the mail. Few days later I got mail, it was another transfer certificate saying the actual would follow in the mail. Few days later the actual certificate did come in the mail. Don't tell anyone but I went to the range before the last piece of mail. I think sailor723 summed it up correctly, "Like a lot of questions about firearms regulations the answer that is closest to the truth is probably something like "it depends/maybe/who knows"
