GTA,
Hey could you help an old guy out. God things have changed.

In Ontario, can I buy a restricted handgun if I don't belong to a gun club, and get a temp ATT to get it home. I will eventually get membership but licencing + gun + club is too much at one go.

If I get my restricted PAL, can I list myself as a "Collector" just to get it home.

You can apply for an ATT to get it home...
You would then have to apply for a separate one if you ever took it to a
suitable range...
It's way easier to join a club and get an ATT that covers all of your restricted
units...
You also support the sport and pretty soon you'll need to get some more units so the first one doesn't get lonely!;)

clubs will give you an ATT with a membership. I dont know if you need to pay for it but if you had to pay for it the charge would more than likly be included in the overall membership fee.

I dunno..I thought in Ontario its hard to get collector status anymore? I would just join a cheap club..several are alittle over a 100 bucks..get a cheap used .22Lr and it will be easy to get your ATT... even though its not a law that you have to be member...

btw..if you buy it mailorder teh shop handling the transfer will do all the stuff for you. CFO will issue a temp ATT and the gun will be sent by courier/post to your house...that way it saves alot of hassle..

It doesn't matter if you join a club and get a att for the club, you still need a seperate att to bring the gun home from a dealer. In Ontario when you buy a handgun the cfc will want to know the club you will be shooting at. Unless you are a collector. Just tell them the club you plan on joining.

I find it cool that I can still get it home without joining a club thought. This is going to kill my finances.
Can anyone recommend a cheap club just to get me started.

Well Shooting in general isnt a cheap hobby...club annual dues are about the same price as a few boxes of rifle rounds or a dozen boxes of cheap handgun rounds. Unless your springing for a well used Hi pOint, why not just join a club you like and see how it goes?

Cheap clubs is not always the way. Some clubs share the same facilities and you can only shoot on "their" nights. An old example (not sure if it's still true), but Toronto Revolver Club use to own the building and it's members could shoot any time they wanted (as long as another club did not rent the space or was their club night), Members of Maple leaf (?) could only shoot on their club night or when invited by a TRC member. So figure out what is the best night for you and figure which club suits your needs better.

When I was living in TO, I was doing shift work (one being 1500-0300 hrs). I joined Colby for the 24 hr access.

Another thing to think about is the membership. Some clubs have "Clique's" and you will regret spending your money there, while others will put you under their wing and mentor you, until you have shot so much that you can't shoot any more (does that really happen?).

Bounce around a couple of clubs and get the feel of the club. Be forethright and tell them that you are ready to commit to a club, but at this time you are only checking things out.

Good luck

you could always just bring it home and not worry about having an ATT. how often does a cop search your car when you get pulled over.
