Hi there,

I have a Mauser 98 sporter, which was drilled and tapped at some point in the past and now has screws in it. I'd like to attach a scope. Can anyone provide some advice about how to do this? There are three holes, with the second and third holes 2.5 cms and 13 cms from the first. I've attached a link to a photo -

Thanks for any help you can give!

Matthew.

Instead of hauling the gun around or buying a mt that don't fit, wrap a piece of paper over the action .Shade over the hole locations with a HB pencil then poke the tip into each hole piercing the paper. Now you have a base template.Bingo.

Many 98's were not correctly drilled so it is very possible you can not just go and by a one piece base that will fit... ideally who ever drilled and tapped it used a Leupold one piece M98 base for locating the hole placement and got it done square to the action. If the rear bridge has been altered you may need a commercial 98 base.

Save yourself a lot of hassle and take it to a gunshop that has mounts and try the mount right there in the store... you will soon see if you need gunsmithing done.

be prepared to pay more that the gun is worth just for the mount and Gunsmith's time. IMO just find another sporterized mauser 98 that already has a scope on it or that is already drilled and tapped and buy it.

I went your route before and was only mildly satisfied after about 400$ spent on a gunsmith and mount.
