Attachment Terminology

Flash hider and flash suppressor are the same thing. Muzzle break and compensator can be the same thing. Some compensators are more about harmonics than mitigating muzzle rise or recoil, like the BOSS system.

As TDC said, you are talking about 2 things with 2 names each. A Flash hider/supressor will not (usually) lessen felt recoil or muzzle rise, as they are designed to hide your muzzle flash at night. A brake/compensator will not (usually!) hide flash, and will often make for larger flash than with no muzzle device at all. A comp or brake will be designed to lessen felt recoil and/or muzzle rise.

Linear compensators such as the Flaming Pig direct muzzle blast downrange, vice back at the shooter, and are usually used on SBRs. Some designs of linear compensators, such as the ATRS Eliminator are highly effective flash hiders as well.
