I'm fairly new to 4570. Been loading 350 Hornadys in my Guide Gun. It shoots them very well. I tried some 400 Barnes last time and they didn't work out 3-4 inches. While at the range I talked to a couple of guys, one said his accuracy load was 1/2 grain more 3031 than mine but with the 405 Rem. I tried it today, two 1" groups. Maybe not the best for D/G but I bet it works on close range Deer. Oh ya the load is 51.5 grs. 3031 405 Rem. My 400 Barnes load was going 1775 fps. with 1/2 gr. less. Just thought I'd pass it on.

nice, how do you like your guide gun?

im interested in my first levergun and i also want a 40+cal rifle so i thoguht a .45-70 lever would be perfect since i cant afford 2 more guns:rolleyes:

Got a 45-70 GG and it isn't going anywhere, it's a tremendous rifle.

Short, handy and packs a huge punch.

It also makes a really great boom when you pull the trigger :dancingbanana:

You won't regret picking one up

buy yourself a gg, but without porting, i have had a quite a few 45/70s i really like this, i use it with light load cast bullets and full powder hornady 350 , mine isnt going anywhere either ,,wade

try H4198 best velocity in this caliber, and all of the powder is consumed. Have also used Benchmark in the 45/7 and 444 with good sucess.

I've used reloader 7 and H322 along with 350gr Hornady rn and fp bullets in my 1895g. I've used it for years and its accurate and deadly on deer, bears, and moose. Very deadly on a bad ace racoon!!!

Once you have a little gun that packs that kinda punch theres no getting ride of it!!

Cheers

I am quite interested in the stainless guide gun from Marlin.
Why no porting?

A hard cast bullet should make a good deer round. Just a nice hole right thru.

I have almost always had best accuracy with 405 Rems, most with 4198 but some good results with RL-7 as well.

Thinking about a lever myself as well. As a handloader the only thing that concerns me with the GG is the length of the barrel. Are you losing a lot of potential from the 45-70 in a short 18.5" barrel? Especially with the ported barrel, your losing even more length. We don't have deer here, I'd be looking at a moose gun.

I am not a fan of short barrels, so I bought the 22 inch Marlin 45-70. I have used the short guide gun, the unported variety. I don't like the extra noise of the short barrels, but I don't think the loss of power is a great concern.
I use the 22 inch model at well under maximum power, because of unpleasant recoil. The recoil is different than from a 30 calibre magnum, say. I think that's where the age old expression, "kicks like a mule," comes from. A slower, but hard whump.
Other than extra noise, I don't see much difference, in shooting the two models. However, I have never shot the ported variety.
The 45-70 with heavy cast bullets, should be pretty deadly on moose, even with the power kept down considerably. Many years ago a brother shot an elk with a 45-70 Springfield Trapdoor, with the lighter loaded 405 grain jacketed factory ammo made for it. He hit the elk on a 45 degree angle in the body and the bullet went clear through.

My top end loads are with AA2015 and H335, with these I can push a 420 gr. LFN GC to over 2000fps and the 480 gr. WFN GC to 1900 fps, not for the faint of heart. These "hammers" are avail. from M.T. Chambers Supply. Be careful what you wish for!

Besides knockin a deer flat on its arse what kind of damage we lookin at from a 400gr cast bullet. Dont want to hijack the tread just curious.

The damage you get with slow moving calibers is very different from small lights bullets / high velocity calibers. Slow heavy bullets will just plow through an animal yet they do not produce much blood shot meat or exsesive damage that you'd find common with lighter faster rounds.

I've used my 18.5 barrled marlin guide gund shooting 350gr fn/rn Hornady on little Vancouver Island deer and it just punches as thumb size holes in and out with tremndous blood loss. Also used them on bears and moose. The bullets have always been pass throughs even on the mooses. Wacks'em good!!
