+1 for the Kywi, I have the short ones for rifle mags and pistol mags and they are the best, they hold their shape, smooth draw and are very minimalist. I have tried a lot if other and everything else pales in comparison.
I just received my Esstac Kywi triple tall and also a short plus two pistol pouches. I have full length Lar15 metal mags and the magazine catch was punched out in a way during manufacturing that causes it to snag and really dig into the kydex. In fact after taking the pouch apart, I found the kydex chewed up and took some sandpaper to it to file the rough bits back down. Unfortunately it seems I’ll have to use my PMAGS that run like butter in kydex.
I’ve seen this with other USGI mags. We’ve got some single mag pouch prototypes that my company is developing, and I’ve seen the same thing happen, where the punched out portion of the mag catch hole digs into the plastic. Our initial batch of test pouches used KYWI’s from Esstac, and some snagged, some did not. We’ve since reached out to some Canadian Kydex companies to make inserts specifically for our pouches.
