Hey there. im new here but was wondering how many gunsmiths/machinists are on the site. im in first year machining at Red River College, winnipeg, manitoba. i am quickly growing more interested in this area and was wondering if anyone had any advice, recommendations etc. on where and what i should focus on to gain further skills in gunsmithing. is it mostly just a hobby thing, or are there many full time gunsmith shops around? what kinds of things can i do with my skills in relation to gunsmithing. to simplify that, say, take a rifle, any type, and put it in the hands of a gunsmith or even just someone such as me with basic machining skills (manual lathes/mills and soon CNC mills and lathes as well). what can i do to it? (repair, modification etc). any help is greatly appreciated, im very interested in what types of things i can do in this area of expertise!

I'm in the same boat as you, just a couple years ahead school wise.

I've found barrel work(crowning, threading, feed ramp work) to be a good place to start.
I think making muzzle brakes/bolts/replacement parts for antiques will be my next step..

Experience is what you need. Until you have that most people will be reluctant to give you anything of value to work on. So what do you do? Work on projects that have little monetary value but will give you the opportunity to learn and try things.

I'm not a gunsmith or a machinist. I do have a lathe and milling machine and do the occasional gun project. I'm also in Winnipeg. I'm kind of busy at the moment but maybe we could discuss things at some time.

I run the web page for the Winnipeg Revolver & Pistol gun club.
