ATV gun cases What do you use, and how do you like it?

I use the rubber coated sling shot style on most of my hunting shooters.
They are a bit tough on the finish.
The Bear likes to toss a fair bit of mud too which likes to land on them.
I bought a Kolpin last year for my daughter to use on the Bear.
I made sure the objective lense didn't bottom out first.
I had a grin and giggle last year when I saw one hunter with a hard case
that had the foam egg crate lining fastened to his quad.
More I think about it, the more I think it's not a bad idea?

thats what i used to do. Drilled 4 holes in a hard case and u-bolted it to the rack. It was very secure. I could fit a mod94 and a win 2200 pump (taken down) in that case. I use a gun boot IV now and its ok but it does vibrate quite a bit.

That's basically what I did, except I strapped it down. One very wet year I discovered that the foam egg crate stuff is very good at holding water. Of course I had the machine pretty much underwater going in that year, it was pouring rain, and the case was probably underwater. It was behind me, so not sure. All I can say is that it was soaked when we got to camp.

The scopes, on the rifles that I normally take on the quad, are either older Baush & Lomb Balvars, or Leupold Vari-X IIIs. I've never had one go out of zero from riding with it in a gunboot.

But I drive a 450 Honda, which is a SLOW, pig of a machine. I don't pound it, I have never flipped it, never have come close to that.

My Kolpins are the model they call 'Transport'. They've got a pretty decent padded insert that the gun slides into.

Our trail is very rough, few sections allow speeds near 10kph. Most are five to 6 KPH, or less. It's fairly normal for someone to upset their machine at some point during the moose hunt, even at those low speeds. You really have to watch carefully for holes.
So far it hasn't been me, but I've been very close a number of times.

I'll just have to hope the rifle survives if I do tip. I always take a spare rifle to camp.

I have one of those gun boots with a removable soft case inside. I can't remember the brand. Its a cheaper one, maybe plano, that I bought at Wal-mart. I usually just throw a shotgun or a synthetic stock mosin (which I bought for that purpose) in it. It serves it's purpose well but I wouldn't trust it to a firearm or scope with any value.

I have seen the tube bent on an Elite 3200, after an extended trip in very rough terrain.

If you must use a Kolpin gun boot, stuff the end of the barrel chamber with material, until the barrel bottoms in the boot before the scope does.

I was going to do that with mine but thought it might cause me other issues. If I stuff it so my scope doesn't hit and then try to throw my 12ga in it probably wont fit. It would be a pain taking the stuff out of the end each time I switch guns.

A Wea$herby tent peg?.......

Too funny..........:D

Nope. Buddy took the rifle to his friend, who is a P.Eng. and also an amateur gunsmith. The guy has a barrel straightening thinga-ma-jig, and he repaired the shattered stock, and straigthened the barrel.
You would have to really scrutinize the rifle to see the repairs to the stock; if you didn't know it had been broken, in fact you would never see it. And the barrel is as good as or better than when it was new.

The funny thing was that before trying to go up the hill, the guy hesitated twice and each time, he said, "I don't like the look of this hill..."

Then he proceeded anyway and flipped his quad.

We weren't laughing at the time, but it's a funny story now, since everything worked out so well.

I don't like boots. I tried 2 varieties and they take up too much room and just get in the way, especially if you are taking a passenger.. I either sling, or use the U bracckets that are mounted on the front of my bike! If i'm worried about the rifle finish, i'll put it in a gunsock before I put it in the U brackets!

x2

my atv came with a nice kolpin mount/boot and i only used it two times over a two year period. not only was the boot constantly in the way, the mount was even more of a headache during normal riding without the boot attached. now that i know scopes bottom out and take a huge beating i'll never use one again.

luckily, it was easy to sell...

Last year while moose hunting, on one section of trail, I took my gun out of the koplin boot and walked the rifle through the rough section of trail. Quads and guns are tools and need to be treated as such.

i used one once. i found it to slow to get out if a animial crossed the trail. also they get damp inside. surface rust on my blued rifle in only a few hours. i carry it on the sling off me sholder now

I've tried that, not a good idea for me, too many low branches. We made these trails ourselves, and they are long. We prune them every year, but they still grow in. Lead man always has a chainsaw for deadfalls, going in, and coming out of camp.
