Hi all,

Im on the verge of getting a used 2001 honda foreman 450es

it has 5500 km and he wants 4500 for it. He says its in perfect condition with all reg maintance done on it. It has a couple extras on it winch , back seat , bumpers, windshield etc.

Do you think its a good deal ? should i look for something with much lower km for my first bike ??

I set a limit of 5grand for my first ATV purchase.. there are lot of newer polaris well within that with less km also but after reading all the bad reviews on them I would rather stay away.

Id will be using this primarily for hunting / ice fishing and some trail riding but not much.

heres a pic

I love my mud bugs!!!!

But I have independent suspension on my machine, the 450 doesn't. You may find them rough, but they are the cat's ass in the mud.

I have a 1999 450ES and just hit 5000km. No problems-just the normal wear/tear stuff and regular maintenance issues. My bike has a lift kit on it, and I just put on the new Swamp Lites this fall. (similar to the Mud Lites). The Mud bugs are great tires.

My hunting buddy's fatherinlaw bought a used 2001 450S from 2 years ago. The farmer that owned it used it to check on his cattle. The bike had 16000 km on it and was perfect shape- and still is- no problems.

Offer the guy $4000.00 and go from there, but $4500 is still a good price.

I have a Y2k 450ES and so far yah give her crap and she asks for more. Dont let any buddy tell you the ES is not reliable, we have have them countless times in deep muddy water and never missed a beat.

Just be carefull that he didnt put the mud bugs on because he was riding it in mud all the time. The sand in the mud wears out a lot of stuff

a bike with bigger tires/lift kit can possibly affect the drive train (bearings, tie rods, even the tranny)if aftermarket products are not bought to compensate for the difference of strain on the parts afore mentioned. What are the size of those tires?

I have 25 inch bearclaws (12" rear, and 10' front), and I would not go any bigger than 26" personally.

They are on a 03 Kodiak 450 and I have not had any problems with bearings tierods etc...

Just something to think about. if allowed a test ride for the day or whatever, take it to someone who knows a lot about the maintenance of ATV's. A dealership may be too busy to look at it. Do you have any frends who are mechanics?

Check CV boots for rips or tears. also, check for a white milky fluid in the differential oil. If so, this indicates there is water in the diffs. If he has not stated this it would make me seriously consider buying a bike from someone else, who knows what else he hasn't told you.

Im not trying to steer you away from the deal, but there are some shady characters out there, and letting you know some tips, just trying to help out.

................I used to ride with a buddy that had the ES. The electrical shift is gimicky to me and just one more thing that can go wrong.

..............he had a charging problem one day and could not shift the transmission due to it being electricaly engaged. Not a feature i would want on a vehicle that is supposed to be rugged and reliable.
