Finally found a lot of private land where the lease holder was more than happy to have me blast his rodant population. Located northwest of Edmonton ab.

I started my day using my ruger mod 10 in .22 lr. Which got me up to about 20 confirmed kills before I noticed that it started hitting dirt 6 inches to the left and right of target. On inspection I noticed that the scope base had worked loose. So with no tools I had to retire the .22 but this meant that I had to break out the beast. My Remington Mod 700 VSF in .223. I had with me for ammo my handloaded hornady V-max pills in 45 grain.

Well I was very impressed with the accuracy (I'm using a 4-12x a kahles scope) and the performance of the V-max. The gophers were totally destroyed, like they stepped on a land mine anyhow it was a fun day.

Some of the best gopher hunts can be had in August and early September. The adults are more or less already in hibernation mode and all the young of the year are out and about getting fattened up. Pastures are often turning brown from heat and dryness making the little varmints easy to spot as well.

Went out this afternoon for a couple of hours to a pasture I haven't hunted for a month or so, hit this one really hard in the spring to the tune of 400ish dead squeaks. They were every where again and been digging like crazy. BVG's out of the 204 dispatched a bout 40 or so.
