Hi Gents,

I am looking for some info about hunting in Ontario. I will be heading there in early May for work and wanted to take a week off while I was in town for a hunt..as Australia is a long want to go and not take advantage of the trip!

Thanks for any info you can provide or offer around game, seasons and tips that I will need to know.

Cheers,

Gav

Only thing that will be open would be Turkey. You will have to take the Turkey course in order to get your tag. Good luck

Might be able to find some groundhogs in a farming community, though it might be a bit early for many of them.

What area of Ontario are you coming to?

Work wise I will need to be in KW.

Is it better for me to look at going for a hunt somewhere else in Canada?
I don't mind havig to travel or fly somehwere I just need to end up back in KW then I will fly back to Sydney.

You'll find a spring bear hunt in some other provinces.

Game birds (except Turkey) and other big game are closed right across Canada as far as I know.

i'm just south of KW (about an hour) varmit and turkey will be open then, but as stated before you will need your turkey course to recieve a tag. pm me maybe our schedules can work out.

Thanks for the info. Do you have the same types of cost if you are from ON too?

Resident costs are much lower then non-resident costs

Off the top of my head

Roughtly $40 each for deer, bear, and moose

$20 for small game (game birds and rabbits mostly)

$30 for turkeys I think (no open season where I hunt so I dont bother with them)

In British Columbia non Canadian residents need to be on BC soil for a year to hunt big game on your own. If you came out here the only option would be to go through a guide outfitter for big $$$$$

As your a non ontario resident you won't be able to buy anything at resident rates. There was a story in a Ontario Out of Doors last year. You have to live in Ontario for 6 months or a year straight prior to the date your buying the licence and have proof before your giving resident rates. Even if you're from Ontario it doesn't mater, if you haven't live in Ontario for that certain time before the date you buy the licence you'll be charged non resident rate.

The story was about a son who wanted to come back to Ontario and hunt with his father but had been gone from Ontario and working in another provinvce. When he went to buy his licence he was charged non residents. The MNR said he wasn't living in Ontario for the previous time frame and was classed non res. If I can find the story I'll post it.

I live outside of Ontario. How do I get a non-resident license to hunt Ontario?

A. Non-residents of Ontario must present one of the following to obtain a non-resident license to hunt in Ontario:

An Ontario non-resident's hunting license issued to you after January 1, 1968
A hunting license issued to you by a competent authority in any jurisdiction as a resident of that jurisdiction after January 1, 1968
An Ontario Hunter Education Examination Report or Certificate issued to you after January 1,1968
An Ontario Hunting License Verification Certificate showing that you were issued an Ontario License to hunt, or passed the Hunting License Examination
A certificate, issued you after January 1, 1968, by a competent authority in any jurisdiction, giving you permission to purchase a resident's hunting license in that Jurisdiction.

wolf and coyote in some areas

You would have to go to North ON wouldnt' you?
Any special tags or things you need to do to hunt them?

Would be good to hunt them as we do not have them in Oz. We have wild dogs that are either domestic dogs that have gone feral or dingo's that have breed with wikd dogs to make a mix.

If you are coming to Kitchener Waterloo, PM me and I will take you out on a Turkey hunt if we can fit it into our schedules.

Thanks for your kind offer mate! PM on the way.
