hello all and good morning, first time post on this forum.

going to buy a ao m1 carbine in the near future. then hopefully get its airborne brother shortly after. questions are...

are g.i. parts compatibale with the ao?

seen some negative responses on the net, but most have been very pleased. stating failur to feed. blamed on ao mag problem and then after a work in period the carbine worked very well. not sure if this was the first run or presant day. do you think it is the same type thing that was happening with the ww2 1911? bad run, some not so stellar parts and a new rifle out of the box (not cleaned or worn a wee bit?)?

like i stated, looked on the net, you tube and on hear. most seemed to like the quality and of course the fun factor. i'm just asking the questions now because i believe most of what i read/watched is relativly old.

any input would be appreciated. please forgive spelling, only got 55% on grade 9 typing, so between typing and thinking and chewing gum i'm a mess. lol

I have an AO m1 carbine. It is a fun gun and very light to pack around. When I first got it I had a few problems, terrible mag and fails to feed. With a bit of minor work to the mag and about 100 rounds through it, she now only has the odd hiccup. If your looking for any support from AO/kahr arms though forget it, I phoned them looking for a new mag to swap out for mine before I did any tinkering and was told no. I said may I speak to a manager or sales high up and was transferred. The higher up says to send the gun and mag back if I didn't like it, I said I just want to swap mags is all and see if another would feed better before I modified the present one I had, still send it all back we don't care I was told. Anyway I digress, lol, that was a year ago. The finish on the stock too was not the best, uneven and light in areas, noticeably. Metal is all good though. I can't get any aftermarket mags to work reliably without filing and/or tinkering but that's just my experience so far. I also bought a USGI sling, mag pouch and oiler and the oiler wouldn't fit in it's gap on the stock, I would have had to file/take a bit of wood off for it too fit which I considered but didn't in the end. Overall a nice little rifle once I got her going. Maybe you'll get a gem out of the box and have no problems. Mine were minor in the grand scope of things and I do enjoy the rifle.

thats about on par to what i've found on the net. of course the yanks seem to get better treatment from ao. if there is problems it will be with the one i get. my luck is bad. saying that i don't mind taking to a gunsmith or tinkering. thought about a real issue g.i. but 95% are restricted and are getting old. something nice about being the first owner of a new rifle like that new car smell. also nice it isn't restricted. a big plus over a gi or a m4 type carbine. also the ammo is way cheaper then a m14 or m1 garand. for thoes reasons i think the ao may be a better option. i sort of fell in love with it as soon as i saw it. lol
 
Another option would be to buy a GI carbine and have it rebarrelled to non-restricted, this might cost a hundred or two more than the AO, but you'd have a GI carbine that works (GI Carbines work even if abused) and it would be NR. The weak link with the carbine generally is the magazines, it's best to buy GI if you can find them.
 
the mags are ok, the mag SPRINGS however are #### and about half the power required. I made mine work reasonably by stretching the spring. best option is get USGI mags. mine is lotsa fun with the new mags and only the odd FTF now.
 
I know my father is interested in an m1. Honestly I'm waffling between this, paying half again as much for a JRA one, or just getting him an m1-a-like mini14.

But if the issues with the auto ordinance one comes down to mags, that's no biggy. Corwin sells mags, I believe
 
100% of real issue Carbines are restricted unless they've been bubba'd with an new barrel. So are any other 'as issued' Carbines. No hunting or carrying 'em around without the longer barrel.
Parts shouldn't be an issue with a new rifle. Mags are interchangeable. Wouldn't spend the kind of money demanded on an AO Carbine myself.
A Mini-14 is not in any way M1A like. Isn't restricted either though. Yet.
