I'm just wondering if the service pistol for the Canadian RCMP and Dept. of Federal Fisheries are available to the general pubic for purchase. Smith & Wesson model 5946 is a lovely 9mm pistol and I was wondering if they are available second hand on the Canadian market. Looked at on close up and I really liked the look and feel of it.

Yes, prohibited (4" Bbl). So, unless you're 12(6), you can't own (an unmodified) one.

Our Police department here in Lethbridge were using the S&W 5946 up to this year then started changing over to i think the HK in a .40 cal and correct me if im wrong. But what did they do with them who knows i didnt buy one i wish i could have. Also werent they pinned 14 in the mag and one in the chamber so 15 shot 9mm. Almost close to the Glock 17 before they pinned them back to 10.

I thought the RCMP's were still using the 5946 didnt think they were changing yet to what no clue.. And if they are i dont think there going to be up for graps do to the mag capacity but anything is possible..

Yeah don't think the RCMP will getting rid of theirs anytime soon as that would require the Canadian government to shell out coin to get them a better, lighter, more up-to-date version. BC Sheriffs are slowly getting rid of theirs so they would be your best bet on looking into where they go from there. Not a bad handgun, but yes, it would require a longer barrel and different magazines as they are also prohibited. As the 5946 hasn't been in production for several years, getting 10 round mags is next to impossible this side of the line.

Sometimes the police trade them in when they replace them. I had about 30 ERT m226 guns from the rcmp. They polish off the rcmp marking before trading them in. But the boxes were marked ERT Prince George RCMP etc. I also got a few of the Vancouver Police ERT Beretta 92's 9mm that they tried out. I also got some of the BC AG's office S&W M17 .22 revolvers marked RCMP, RCMP Auxiliary etc that they sold off.. But I think that it doesn't happen much anymore. There was a time when the Quebec police Departments sold pistols, rifles and smg's to dealers, but that was in the 70's to about the early 1980's.

With our government's previous history the RCMP pistols will probably be destroyed or sent to third world police departments when they get replaced with something more modern.

have you ever fired one?

I ask because, while they are cool, and rare etc, they don't shoot very nicely. Very heavy trigger, very gritty, lots of creep.

many off the shelf pistols shoot nicer.

sigh if they cleaned them up and sold in a nice box with red serge and some RCMP swag they could almost pay for the replacement pistol.

It's now illegal for any public agency to sell it's surplus firearms. The 5946 is prohib 12.6 and extremely rare - there were a couple of US PD's who used them and the RCMP. Virtually no civillians ever bought them, even when they weren't prohibited primarily because there were many guns available that were easier to shoot. The 5906 is much more common, basically the same gun with a standard DA/SA trigger, it's prohib too but a really devoted shooter could get a barrel done for it.

If the OP were interested in these firearms for their 'historical perspective', I can see the point.
If the main motivator was it's use as a firearm, as noted, they really have no redeeming features, apart from them being one of the first, readily available, 'police suitable' type firearm with a 'large capacity', double stack magazine.
The magazine volume was the selling point, but the firearm itself is pretty underwhelming to shoot.

I would love to get my hands on both a 5946 and 5906 with modified barrels to take them from prohib to restricted. There are some out there but no one wants to let them go. I don't blame them. This 59xx line of S&W's have a certain attraction that I find just plain cool. I have a 5906 PPC with a 6" barrel and it is lonely. It needs a mate or two.

When the RNC were switching over from the Ruger revolver to the Sig 226, the company supplying the Sigs took the Rugers as a trade in.

No idea what happened to the Rugers afterwards; but they didn't come up on the Canadian market. No doubt went to some third world country.

I never got to shoot the firearm due to my friends department were at the range training and it wouldn't have been appropriate.. I did notice that the firearm was heavy for a service pistol even unloaded. I was attracted to it's look and the stainless steal has always had a place in my heart. Made me wonder why our Federally funded police force haven't been upgraded to more updated firearms and possibly to the more accepted 40 caliber round. Does the RCMP have an AR platform at their disposal now ?

Agreed! Shot my Bro's and it was a piece of junk! I don't get why they went with this thing! He shot my CZ Shadow and he was blown away-no comparison.

That's because the Shadow is designed as a competition pistol while the 5946 is designed as a service pistol.
