When I take my diopter peep sighted .308 rifle to the range, I seem to average about a 5 inch group for five shots @300 yards, off the bench.
Some days a little less, and some days a little more. But 5 inches seems to be a good average.

Would this be acceptable accuracy for any TR shooters?

cheers........

TR matches tend to be two convertible sighters, plus seven, ten or fifteen on score.
Can you fire this number of consecutive shots inside two minutes of angle prone with a sling?
Sounds as if the rifle could be competitive.

If the group is centered, it would fit in the bull.

A group might have most shots well inside the 5", with just two defining the top and bottom of the group.

Are you asking about the rifle/ammo or your shooting ability? I test my rifles/ammo with a 24x scope off sandbags. Groups run around 2". A real good group at 300 yards is 1", but good ammo does a little better than a half minute.

Then when I shoot off my elbows, I know any big groups are me and my shooting ablity.

Shot with fellow at Connaught last Wed prone Target rifle .308 30" barrel he fired 2+15
he shot all 15 in V bull 3.25" I beleive, wind was zerro, pretty amazing to shoot of your elbow and gun on shoulder. I asked him he he had ever done it before, he had done it several times, once at 800y when he won Queens cup at Bisley.

Brutus FYI your rifle is most likely shooting just fine, i.e. good enough for a TR shooter to win a match with it. If you want to verify that the best way to test your rifle and ammo is with a scope and rest. I can see from your photo that you have a real Target Rifle. Unless the barrel is worn out or there is something wrong with the action or bedding (and all of these can be fixed) you can reasonably expect to be able to get well under 1 MOA groups at 300-600. If you do everything right, it is even fair to be able to expect that you will be able to approach 0.5 MOA groups for 10-15 shots.

FWIW I have shot my TR (a Musgrave with a MacLennan barrel, in my case) off of bags and with iron sights on a couple of occasions. Firing at standard DCRA 300m targets, it seemed that 10 shots pretty reliably gave me groups that would produce scores of 50.7V plus or minus one V. Which I find interesting because when I am really shooting well, that's about what I am able to accomplish off my elbows. Also interesting is that I know that the rifle (I used to shoot it in F Class) is capable of 0.5 MOA groups.

manitou210, the 15 out of 15 Vs that you saw at Connaught last week, was that on a TR target or on some other target?

The DCRA TR 300 yard and 300 metre targets are pretty tight targets; the 5-ring is 1.8MOA and the V-bull is 0.9 MOA. It is *very* unusual to see a score of 50.10V being fired on this target. I don't know if I have ever seen or heard of a 75.15V being fired on this target. So if the guy you saw shooting (who was it BTW?) did this with iron sights on the 300 TR target, you really saw something special happen.

The 300m V bull is 3.125" and the fellow at Connaught last Wed with the 15V was Alain, I believe. Not too many of us have won the Queens Prize so that narrows it down a lot. I was at Connaught last Wed.

Wow, 75.15V at 300m really is incredible shooting, even for a shooter of Alain Marion's stature (probably fair to say, one of the top Canadian fullbore shooters of all time).

Ian was there like he posted and it was Alain who shot the perfect score,
