What is the expected accuracy for a standard Norinco M305/M14 with a good scope (3x9, or 10 or 12 power)

What are your averaged group sizes at 100, 200 and 300 meters?

Do these rifles match Hunting rifles like Browning BAR, Benelli R1, Remington 750 in accuracy?

Accuracy and M305 are not natural partners. The basic rifles are often poorly put together, and even the high end seem to suffer from the one round flier. I'd expect that 3-5" would be truly representative of the average M305 at 100m.

Remember folks, perspective here.... It's a $400 critter gitter. It's a diamond in the rough and ya shouldn't be polishing a turd (so to speak). Don't throw (hey, it's yer $) tonnes of money after it (like tax and spend Lieberals). Enjoy the addiction for what it's worth.

Now if you are setting up that M14 for a deer/moose/bear/zombie rig, now let's talk! Remember, it ain't a Precision Rig, if you want an accurate shooter get a Savage, Winnie, Remmy, Tikka, SAKO, or whatever. You need a to hell and back bombproof rig, we can tweak your $400 Norc with ease! :D

Cheers,
Barney

See below a typical result that I've been getting with my reloads.

Edit....
This is at 100 yards, 3-9x scope, aftermarket spring guide. The only pricey upgrade is a Blackfeather stock the performance of which I think one could replicate with a bedded USGI or Boyds stock.

Last group was a dump of 2 mags and showed a downward POI drift, due I think to barrel heating.

Following on from Barney's comment, remember what USGI standards for M14 accuracy were - even National Match was only 3.5" at 100m. IMO the #1 thing to do is to find ammo (or a load ) that your rifle likes as that usually will make all the difference and is way more important that many of the accurizing stuff we all do.

It depends entirely on how well you put it back together while tuning it. Most M305's require tuning and are not ready to go out of the box, most were not assembled properly.

Hey pr589, I was just wondering what your load data is for your M305? Brass, primer, powder, bullet? COAL? ect... Im just about to start working up a load and was just wondering

Brts28 - I've been focusing on using 168 gr. Hornady BTHP to minimize the variables and the two pet loads I've been focusing on lately are 39 gr. of IMR 3031 and the other is 42.5 gr. of Varget (for the inevitable commenters...I know it's slow powder and I'm going to bend my op. rod, blah, blah, blah...). I have also had good to excellent results with 39.5 grains of IMR 4895 (including my best ever .59" group), although the other loadings just seem to produce more consistent groups.

I've been using CCI #200 primers and loading to a COAL of 2.80". I haven't found COAL to make a measurable difference in my rifle and have had good results loading from 2.75" to about 2.80".

Brass-wise, I use anything I can lay my hands on and have found little difference in results but I do make sure that I group headstamps as much as possible.

A friend and I were shooting very similarly set-up M305s yesterday and were trying various hand loads from each other and from other guys at the range. I've done this before and as we might have expected, pet-loads from one rig shot poorly in every one else's gun and vice versa. Just went to show that each gun seems to like something just a little different.

Hey pr589,
You shouldn't give away all your secrets, especially when you know I am chasing your results!! Definately need to bump my powder charge a little and am getting ready to load the 42.5 grains of Varget with my 178 gr Amax, have to get rid of them somehow, and my 174 gr sierras that I have high hopes for.
For some reason mine seems to like the Amax if I get over the 42 grain mark (2.039 and 1.408) on 2 different weekends. The 168 grain Hornady match did 1.307, 2.267 and 1.9 in three different weekends.
Need to load more rounds at this charge with each bullet now to see what results I get. If I get to a consistent 1 1/2 group on average I will be a happy camper!!

Some very good shooting Pr589. Looks like these M14's can be quite capable with in the right hands.

Some are that good right out of the box. some need a little fiddling to get there, some need a complete overhaul, (some the barrel fall right off, no kidding) and some will never be there EVER.

If you dont win the lottery and get a shooter straight out of the box, you will have to invest some time and effort. Sometimes you will have to invest some cash.

Generally it is not only capable handsfor shooting but capable hands for fine tuning this platform that will get you that accuracy

The Socom need tuning to perform but overall it would cost much money to equal the accuracy of a NM M1A... Got a Socom with a Black Arrow spring guide and my NM M1A side by side at 50 yards with the same ammo cheap copperwash chinese, both with a CASM gen ll mount and scoped... JP.
