Average SKS cleaning time with corrosive ammo

How often are you guys dissembling the bolt for cleaning the free floating firing pin?

I give the bolt a good shake every cleaning to make sure I can hear the pin rattling. IF I don't like the sound I will take the pin out and clean the tunnel.

I just G-96 the guts out of mine right after everytime I shoot it. Piston, op-rod,bolt, carrier, trigger mech, gas tube, bore etc. Like the Frank's Red Hot Lady - I put that sh*t on everything. I always shoot corrosive, have never used window cleaner or boiling water and not one speck of rust so far. G-96 is like love in a can for your guns.

Ammonia also neutralizes corrosive salts

Sure, but glass cleaner is designed for cleaning windows and would typically have a relatively higher ammonia content. There's always different ways to do things, and different consequences. For some people the cost savings in using cheap glass cleaner might be their choice, but they might also tend to splash it around a little more. Leave a bit of ammonia residue on some aluminum part and it will pit the surface in time. I'm not saying don't do it. I'm just pointing out that not all metal does well with ammonia.

Just wanted to get some input on peoples average cleaning time of an SKS after using corrosive ammo with it, Just washed and scrubbed mine clean and took about 2 hours which I think is a little excessive. How long does it take you guys and what steps do you take?

I clean my Cz 858 after every use as soon as I can. Even if it is only a dozen rouns to zero.

About 30 to 40 min. I love every part of shooting and that includes cleaning the guns. I strip the SKS down and set the wood aside. Boiling water, Hopps and air compressor. I never did get the "I hate cleaning rifels" thing.
I have run into guys at the range who couldn't get their SKS working. They were so dirty and corroded they had to hammer the breach open. When I asked on 2 occasions when the last time they had cleaned them, the reponse was "Do you have to clean these?"

Anywhere from 30min to 2 hours
If i have alot of guns to clean ill clean in and get it pver with
If im bored and take my time i throw in a lip full of dip crack a beer and relax while cleaning it

Windex does not contain any meaningful amount of ammonia. A trace amount of ammonium hydroxide is used as a ph adjuster. The "Ammonia D" is a trade name. Windex contains ethyleneglycol monohexylether, water, isopropanol, propylene glycol and blue colorant.

The water in windex is the only thing that dissolves potassium chloride. The only advantage over water is that it dries quickly.

I usually take an hour. That said, I take my time. I have a beer, put on some music, sit in a decently comfy chair and enjoy myself. Sometimes I'll have a smoke, too. I'm kind of anal-retentive about these things, I like my rifles to be really clean.

I appreciate this type of answer. Concise, precise, and cited. This rookie thanks you.

About 45-60 mins. I enjoy stripping/cleaning my rifles, so i take my time and relax a bit...A beer or two, half a dozen smokes and 2 corrosive rifles getting a bath :D

toooooooooo long, I get pissed off after 20 mins and the patches are still as black as when I started.

I tried the windex/boiling water/oil method, I like that much more.

I heard somewhere that shooting a few shots of non-corrosive ammo is a good way to neutralize that corrosive salts too, but I have not confirmed this

SKS Cleaning

Can someone please explain the "boiling water" bit? I know the bores are chromed but what about the rest of the gun? Are there no concerns about that rusting? Thank You much.

Not all are chrome lined. I have a 51 tula refurbished and it isnt. My dad has a 54 tula and his is.

Boiling water is supposed to neutralize the salts and evaporate quickly
