I found these pictures of the little known AVS36 designed by Simonov (father of the SKS). It is the predecessor of the SVT40 (designed by Tokarev). For more details check http://world.guns.ru/rifle/rfl16-e.htm

Hmm... odd, seems to have had an SVT-40 muzzle extension added on. The cleaning rod's also in the wrong place. Some kind of developmental model maybe?

Yeah, it looks kind of odd, like Dolly: bah-bah. Should have had a different muzzle brake. I'd sell a kidney to own one of AVS though...

That's some cobbled together monstrosity built from a standard late model Russian SKS with some orphan SVT parts wedded to it along with a Chinese sling, just to add insult to injury. Has a modified Chinese made bolt carrier on it, too. A criminal waste of a Soviet SKS. Just noted a two piece late model Chinese made gas tube under that crap as well.

What a joke.

A box shaped shroud has been attached to the normal magazine. The markings on the receiver show the post 1955 Tula star, btw.

The AVS 36 in no way follows either the design of the SVT series or the later SKS

Sounds like Bubba crossed an SKS with an SVT-40.

Got me fooled

I must admit he did a good job as the end product looks good to my eyes...

Lol, I had a few SVT parts I was going to dress an SKS up woth before I sold it. I guess someone had similar ideas.

LOL, if its the muzzle piece I bought from you, its going onto an SVT, I'll post pics when I'm done if I can figure out how:confused:

Darren,
I've done that change, pm or email me if you have any difficulties.

My apologies for the confusion I created.

In my photalbums, I found two more pics of the same rifle. Strangely, the stampings on the receiver are in Latin alphabet (rather than Cyrillic). Can someone shed some light ?

I should have known better  . AVS36 rifle production ended in 1940.

The Russians did experiment with a carbine version of the SVT-40 but it looks different from what you have. http://www.mosinnagant.net/USSR/Svt-Photos1.asp Could be a blatant attempt by someone to fake a carbine or AVS. If only it could talk! That last photo showing the date stamp looks odd - the date and the star look to have been gouged out with a dremel tool and not stamped with a punch, it is uneven and rough.

Just another bubba mod. Done to look like it's some "rare" item. Markings are obviously faked as well as incorrect compared to Soviet practice. For one, military arms are not marked with a model designation. Latin alphabet? C'mon!

AVS have the date marked on the right hand rail. Mine was Izhevsk marked and dated 1938. It was one of the scope rail equipped models, which according to DN Bolotin, were built semi only. Present owner has it registered as a non restrict as it is not considered a CA.

The action of the AVS is in no way similar to either the SVT or SKS.
It was a more abrupt action than the SVT to shoot and had a tendency to pop primers when cycling. Magazine is (was) 15 rounds and not interchangeble with the SVT.
