Hey guys.

I'll try to make it brief. I can understand how annoying it can be to answer the same questions, over'n over again. And yes, I did pour thru past threads. But there's so much info, and my mind is atrophying by the minute...

I own an AR-15. Bought it because I wanted a rifle just like the ones in 'Nam :p, c/w triangular hand guard. It's a Colt SP1, for whatever that's worth. No forward assist bolt and a barrel length of approx. 20", excluding the flash hider. I bought it used back in 90' and never really shot it much other than ripping thru a couple hundred rounds while bump-firing it out in a sand pit. Ahhh, the good ole days....:(

Took it outta the safe for the 1st time in 20+ yrs, went out to the range to run it thru its paces.

#1 The trigger sucks. I can't believe that I managed to throw 5 rounds into a sub 2" grouping with that trigger. It's got so much creep, never mind the high pull. Brownell's sells adjustable & non-adjustable trigger kits by manufacturers like Sprinco & Jard for $150 US. I don't need a 2lb trigger, 4-5lbs is fine, just don't want all the grit and creep. Suggestions?

#2 Any recommendations on improving the reliability of this rifle? I don't have any issues with it, but is there anything in particular I should be replacing/swapping?

#3 I've become romantically attracted to these newer ARs with puny short barrels and collapsible stocks. I'm talking major wood here. Saw a Norinco at the range last week and was shocked to hear that they were selling for a paltry $850. Is it true, do you still get what you pay for?

Thanks for tolerating this AR newb

Look up "AR-15 5 minute trigger job" on Google. I've done it to all of mine. Huge difference.

As for the Norinco's, most people are happy with them. Just remember fit and finish may not be up to a Stag or Colt.

I read the commentaries on the 15 minute trigger job. Most people were happy but there were a few reports of failures to fire due to the hammer spring mod. Being that the theory behind Murphy's Law was specifically designed to be proven on me and everything that I do, I'm gonna go with a drop-in kit.

Question; There are two hammer pin sizes, how do I determine which one I need? Is this pin simply the one that the hammer rotates on? If so, I'm miked out at approx. .15". Does this sound right for a Colt SP1?

Oh, and one last thing. Have I got anything amazing here, this rifle being a genuine Colt and being an SP1? Any plus for owning this rifle, or is it old news/old technology?

Thanks for the responses & advice, guys!

2) if it shoots, don't mess with it. If it stops shooting reliably, post about the symptoms here and someone will have useful suggestions. Most likely wear issue is the gas rings.

3) apparently the finish can be less than beautiful, but the Norincos shoot well enough (about 2" at 100) and work reliably overall.

You don't move around me with that AR!!!:p

I tried really hard but couldn't get it to fall by accident. I share your concern, particularly in light of the fact that with the JARD, you can control the pre-travel, over-travel, and safety engagement. With it adjusted so most pretravel was eliminated, and enough overtravel to ensure reliability, it was perfectly safe.

your sp1, i have noticed sells for 1000-1200 shipped and insured.
that would give you the money to get the norc and a lot of ammo.
before you do anything just polish the trigger asymbaly, see if that does it for you.
